These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

HOW TO ENTER SERVICE MODE TO TOSHIBA 42PW23P



To enter into Service Mode

* Press "Mute" button once.
** Press "Mute" button once again, and while pressing it, press "Menu" button on the front panel of the TV.
*** Release both buttons, and press "Menu" button on the TV.
Adjustment mode window sill be displayed. 

Key Function in the Service Mode.

[1]. Screen adjustment mode ON/OFF :  -/-- button on the remote.
[2] Test signal selection: Power button on the remote.
[3] Selection of adjustment items : Channel UP/DN buttons on the remote.
[4] Change of data value : Volume Up/Dn on the remote.
[5] Adjustment Menu Mode ON/OFF : Menu button on TV.
[6] Initilisation of memory : [Call + Channel UP button on TV] (Never try to perform initilization unless you have changed the memory IC.  If memory IC has changed, this must be done)
[7] Reset the count of operating
protect circuit to "00" : [Call + Channel DN button on the TV
[8] "RCUT" selection : Digit 1 on remote.
[9] "GCUT" selection : Digit 2 button on remote.
[10] "BCUT" selection : Digit 3 button on remote.
[11] "SCNT" selection : digit 4 button on remote.
[12] "COLP" seelection : digit 5 on the remote control (Color Thickness Correction)
[13] "TNTC" selection ; digit 6 button on remote. [Displayed differently as COLP[PAL]; COLC[NTSC]; COLS[SECAM].
[14] "TNTC" selection : digit button 6 on remote.
[15] Convergence adjustment : 'Yellow" button on remote.
[16] Self diagnostic display ON/OFF : Digit 9 button on remote.

Selecting the adjusting items.

*For every pressing of "Channel UP" button in the service mode, changes the adjustment items.
**Pressing "Vol UP/DN" will change the data value in the range from (00H to FFH). The range will depend on adjusting item.

*** To "Exit" from service menu, switch OFF the TV by its front panel power ON/OFF switch.

Method for Initilization of memory data, after memory replacement

* Enter the service mode, and select any register item.
** Press and Hold "CALL" button on the remote control, and then press the 'CH UP" button on the tv. The initilization will be completed.
*** Check an 'Auto Search Memory" option [refer to user manual], and make confirm that the set will work with it well
