However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

  • Turn on the player
  • Open the disc tray
  • Press SETUP
  • Press 9, 1, 0, 1, 0 (first digit (9) is for multi-region)
  • Press STEP, SHUFFLE, NEXT
  • Close disc tray

No disc should be inserted
  • Press OPEN/CLOSE on the remote
  • Press SETUP

  6. Turn the player off and on.

  1. Turn the player off
  2. Press and hold FAST FORWARD and STOP and the black button
  3. Turn on the player (with POWER)
  4. When the AKAI logo is shown, release FAST FORWARD and STOP but keep holding the black button.  A list, separateed into columns, appears.
  5. Press ENTER
  6. Press CURSOR RIGHT
  7. Change it to '00' for region free
  8. Press ENTER
  9. Press POWER to turn the player off
  10. Release the black button
  11. Turn on the player.

  • Press ON/OFF
  • Press OPEN/CLOSE
  • Press SETUP
  • Go into "PERFERENCE" at Setup Menu
  • Scroll down to the "Country/Region Code" and choose the country.

  • Open the disc tray
  • Press 8, 4, 2, 1
  • A menu should appear. (9 = multi-region)

  • Turn on the player

  • Go to "Version"
  • Select region using LEFT/RIGHT (0 = code free)

  • Open tray

  • Leave the menu.
