These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCEDURE

Set up the driver
1: First set up MProg 2.3/Drivers/CDM_Setup.exe, After set up, the PC can identify the CV2232.
2: Plug the USB port of the CV2232 to the PC, Set up the user settings.  Open the MProg 2.3/ EEPROM_DATA/ MSTAR.ept, then point the
button  put the data update to the EEPROM.
3: When update the software, please dip switch assigned to the end DEBUG.

Such as the picture connection
1 Make sure the CON2 (USB port) is connected with PC support 5v power for CV2232.
2 Using the VGA wire to connect the VGA-OUT with the VGA port of CV318.
3 The position of the button such as the picture. ALL down!
4 Last, make sure the CV318. plug into 12V power.
SOFTWARE TOOL
The software update tool is ISP_TOOL V4.4.0.4of Mstar: ISP_TOOL V4.4.0.4.exe, This software is portable software , no install ,direct copy the file to PC ,t hen you can use it , if the hardware is connected , please according to this step to update the software.
SETUP
If it is the first run the program, need setup ,point “Connect”button:
Point “Connect”button , If the hardware board plug into 5V power. ISP_TOOL V4.4.0.4 will be auto select the USB port. You must select the speed yourself, but the max speed not to exceed more than the 420KHZ. The picture as that is OK.
Select the Flash style, point the“Connect”button, the software Tool will be auto select the Flash. Then the connect is OK, you can go to the next step.
Point “Read”, read the program need to burn.
Point ”Auto”button ,enter burning interface Now ,point the interface of the ”Run” button ,can begin to burn the program at once . At the burning process ,make sure the TV power already connect and in boot-strap state.
Caution: if you operate the step 3, can’t select the device type, such as First , make sure the wire is connected, check the hardware. And check the CV119x plug into 12V power.Then you can pull out the USB port ,and insert the USB port once again, as well as the plug power of CV318, or close the ISP_TOOL V4.4.0.4 , and open it.Time after time. And check the speed don’t be more than the 420KHZ, reduce the speed.
Upgrade by U-disk
1 Format the U-disk(remark: pls save all the date in the U-disk before format)
2 Copy software to the U-disk root corresponding (software :bin document)
3 Insert U-disk into SERVICE interface on condition of turn off power
4 Power on and then procedure can upgrade automatic.
5 After upgrading ,disconnect U-disk ,upgrading will be finish when restart power (upgrading finish after blue light stop glinting )

HOW TO UNLOCK APEX TELEVISIONS


To unlock most models of Apex TVs code “6688” is used.  You must have its original remote control to unlock it.
Press the ‘MENU” button on the remote control, and use the ‘Arrow” buttons, and scroll down to “PARENTIAL GUIDE” option.
Press the “ENTER” button.
The set will ask for password.
Type this default parental password [6688]. This code will override if any password you have set in before.
Use “Arrow “ keys to switch the parental lock to “OFF”.  You can view all programmes, no matter the ratings be.
Press “Exit” button on the remote control and watch all channels.
NB: Original remote control might be needed to unlock the TV.  Some models of universal remote controls also can be used

Press "Menu" button on the remote control and use the arrow buttons to scroll down to
"Parential Control" option. 
Press Enter button.
Type the default parential code "6-6-8-8" to override the current parential code.
Use arrow keys to switch the parential lock to OFF.  This allows all programmes to be viewed no matter the rating is.
Press Eit button on the remote control to start watching all your channels.

  1. After proper connections to TV and Converter has done, turn ON both the devices.  [Your TV and satellite receiver]
  2. Push the "Menu" button on the "Apex DT-250 remote control.
  3. Press UP and DOWN  buttons on the remote control, to scroll through tthe menu options , and stop when 'Parental Controls" is highlighted.  Press the "Right" button to select the option.
  4. Enter your four digit password. [If you haven't set your password, use the default code (0000).
  5. Use "UP and "DN" arrows, to change or set parental control settings.  You can select from "None" G / PG / PG-13 / R / NC-17 / & X.  Once your setting is highlighted, press the "Right" button to go to next screen.
  6. Use "UP" and "DOWN" arrows to change or set parental control ratings.  You can select from "None" TV-Y / TV=Y7 / TV-G / TV-PG / TV-14 & TV-MA.  Once your desired setting is highlighted. press "OK" button to save the settings.  Once the settings has been saved, will be taken back to main menu
  7. Press "EXIT" key to exit the main menu.

TO LOCK AN APEX TV 
  1.  Press the "Menu" button on the remote control, and keep pressing it, until system menu is highlighted. Press the Right Arrow Button.
  2. Press "Down" arrow button, until parental guide is highlighted. This will turn ON or OFF  the password function.
  3. Press "Menu" button to turn ON the password protection.
  4. Press the "Down Arrow" button to enter a new code using numeric buttons on the remote control.
  5. Press the "Left Arrow" button, when complete.
  6. Press the UP and DN arrows to navigate the TV Rating Menu.
  7. Press the Menu button on the highlighted rating that you wish to block.
  8. Press "Left Arrow" to exit once finished.  That's it.

TO UNLOCK AN APEX TV
  • PARENTAL LOCK
The TV prompts you to enter the password, when you setup parental controls.  Can block program according to MPAA ratings or their contents. Such as [V] for violence, [S] for sexual situations.
  • DISABLING THE LOCK
Can override parental controls on most Apex models, simultaneously press "F" and "Mute" buttons on the remote control.  
If your TV Model is [GT 2011J / GT 2011S], press and hold the display button on the remote control for more than 10 seconds.  The RED KEY will vanish and V-Chip will be unlocked. 
  • OVERRIDE CODES
The default parental lock code for Apex is [6688]. 
So if you haven't set set a new code, entering 6-6-8-8  will unlock the TV.  
If you've set a password, and did forget it, enter [3308].  This will reset code and unblock the program.

SUPPLY VOLTAGE ADJUSTMENT.

+B voltage has close relation to High Voltage.  To avoid X ray radiation, +B voltage should be [+145VDC]
  • AC power supply to 120+/-2V.
  • Connect a digital voltmeter to two pins of [C820], and turn ON the TV.
  • Receive Philips Test pattern.
  • The voltmeter should read [145 +/- 1.5V]

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE

  1. Decrease the volume to 'Zero' by pressing Volume (-ve) on the remote control.
  2. Press 'Menu" on the front panel, while pressing and holding "Mute" on the remote control to display "S" on the upper left corner of the screen.
Function of Service Mode.
  • MCU controls the operation of ICs via IIC bus.  In the service mode, items are adjusted by the remote control.
In The Service Mode:
  1. Press 'PIP CH+' repeatedly to scan through the following menus
  2. Press CH+ \ CH- to select an item, and press Vol+ | Vol- to adjust.
Do not adjust anything at Menu-1, since it has been adjusted in its optimum state at the Factory.  Any adjustment to this menu may cause the projection TV to work improperly.

The values in Menu-2 & Menu-5 are averages of definite values at the factory.  Only adjust the values you are allowed to adjust in this.  Do not change those you are not allowed to do so.  

Self Check

Self-Check is used to check the ICs and function modules of the Projection TV.
Press 'PIP CH+' to display the menu, when in the service mode.

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE
  • Decrease the Volume to (0), by pressing Vol ( - ) on the remote control.
  • Press "Menu" on the front panel of the TV, and while holding  it, press "Mute" button on the Remote Control.
  • The letter "S" will appear at the upper left corner of the screen indicating that the set is in Service Mode.
Function of Service Mode:
In service mode:  Press "PIP CH +" repeatedly to scan through the following menus.  
                              Press Ch Up | Ch Dn, to select an item, and press Volume Up | Volume Dn to        adjust the data value to selected item.
There is no need adjust this menu since it has been adjusted in its optimum state at the factory.  Any adjustment to this menu may cause the projection TV to work improperly.
