These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TURNING THE SOUNDBAR ON AND OFF
Set the sound bar’s Power switch to the “On” position.
Press the Power button on either the sound bar or the remote to turn the sound bar on. To put the sound bar in the Standby mode, press either Power button while the sound bar is on.
If you do not press the Power button, the sound bar will automatically go into the Standby mode approximately 15 minutes after the audio signal ceases. NOTE: If you have put the sound bar into the Standby mode by pressing the Power button, you must manually turn it on by pressing the Power button again. If the sound bar has automatically gone into the Standby mode 15 minutes after the audio signal has ceased, it will automatically turn itself on when it receives an audio signal at either the analogue (Aux) input or the optical digital input.
TURNING THE SUBWOOFER ON AND OFF
Set the subwoofer’s Power switch to the “On” position. The subwoofer will automatically attempt to establish pairing with the sound bar (the subwoofer’s LED will flash blue). If pairing is not established within one minute, the subwoofer will enter the Standby mode (its LED will turn amber). If pairing is established, the subwoofer will turn on (its LED will light blue continuously).  The subwoofer will remain on for approximately one minute after the sound bar enters the Standby mode, or for approximately 15 minutes
after the audio signal ceases.
If you will be away from home for an extended period of time, or if you will not be using the system for an extended period, set the subwoofer’s Power switch to the “Off” position.
PAIRING THE UNITS FOR WIRELESS OPERATION
After turning the sound bar and subwoofer on for the first time, you will need to “pair” the subwoofer and sound bar so they both operate at the same wireless frequency. To pair the units, press the Wireless Pairing switches on both units within 30 seconds. The units will communicate with each other and operate at the same frequency.
NOTE: The maximum wireless operating distance between the sound bar and subwoofer is approximately 50 feet (15.3m).

ADJUSTING THE SYSTEM’S VOLUME
Press the sound bar’s or remote’s Volume Up and Down buttons to raise and lower the system’s volume one step at a time. Hold down the buttons to continuously raise or lower the volume.
MUTING THE SYSTEM
Momentarily press the sound bar’s Power button or press the remote’s Mute button to mute the system. (The Power Indicator flashes blue.)  Momentarily press the sound bar’s Power button or press the remote’s Mute button again to un-mute the system. (The Power Indicator turns to a steady blue.)
SURROUND MODE BUTTONS
These buttons switch the sound between normal stereo (the Surround Mode Indicator lights white) and 3-D Surround (the Surround Mode Indicator lights blue). The 3-D Surround setting will produce a complete surround-sound experience for anyone sitting in front of and several feet away from the sound bar. Although it is particularly effective when watching movies, you can also try the 3-D Surround setting for music
SUBWOOFER LEVEL KNOB
Use the subwoofer’s Level knob to balance the bass with the rest of the sound. Play music or movies that you are familiar with, and adjust the subwoofer’s Level knob so the bass sounds balanced on both music and films. Listen to several different music recordings and film soundtracks that contain strong bass passages, and find a setting for the Level knob that doesn’t over-emphasize the bass or make it sound weak
Once you find a setting for the subwoofer’s Level knob that balances the bass with the rest of the sound, you shouldn’t have to change it
SUBWOOFER CUTOFF CONTROL
The subwoofer’s Cut-off control adjusts the subwoofer’s cut-off between 40Hz and 200Hz. The higher you set the Cut-off control, the higher in frequency the subwoofer will operate and the more its bass will “overlap” that of the sound bar. This adjustment helps achieve a smooth transition of bass frequencies between the subwoofer and the sound bar for a variety of different rooms and subwoofer locations.  To set the Cut-off control, listen for the smoothness of the bass. If the bass seems too strong at certain frequencies, try a lower Cut-off control setting. If the bass seems too weak at certain frequencies, try a higher Cut-off control setting.
SUBWOOFER PHASE SWITCH
This switch determines whether the subwoofer’s piston-like action moves in and out in phase with the speakers in the sound bar. If the subwoofer were to play out of phase with the sound bar speakers, some of the sound waves produced by the sound bar and subwoofer could be cancelled out at some frequencies, reducing bass performance and sonic impact. This phenomenon depends in part on the relative placement of the sound bar and subwoofer in the room.  Although there is no absolutely correct setting for the Phase switch, in most cases it should be left in the “0°” position. When the subwoofer is properly in phase with the sound bar speakers, the sound will be clearer and have more impact. It will make percussive sounds like drums, piano and plucked strings sound more lifelike. The best way to set the Phase switch is to listen to music that you are familiar with and adjust the switch so that drums and other percussive sounds have maximum impact.

Please do not try to attempt any repair work; if you’re not well experienced in service field.
The troubleshooting described here is the only thing you can do as a user.

Troubleshooting
If there is no sound from any of the speakers, check the following:
• Make sure the subwoofer is plugged into an active AC wall outlet.
• Make sure the Master Power Switch, located on the rear of the subwoofer, is in the “On/Standby” position.
• Make sure there is a source – for example, a VCR or television – hooked up to the TV or tape/aux input jacks on The Source.
• Make sure that the program material is playing.
• Re-check the hookup connections.  
If most of the sound comes from the center-channel speaker, with little or no information from the surround channels, note the following:
Although most of today’s televisions are equipped with stereo audio output jacks, some stereo televisions have poor audio sections and are unable to provide a Dolby Pro Logic encoded signal. In the unlikely event that you experience this problem, connecting the audio outputs from your Hi-fi VCR, laser disc player, DVD player, or Satellite receiver directly to one of the inputs on The Source will provide a proper audio signal and allow you to enjoy true Dolby Pro Logic surround sound.
If there is no sound from the surround speakers or sound is very low, check the following:
• Check all connections between the amplifier and each of the speakers.
• Raise the surround volume  with the remote control.
• Make sure the TV show or movie you are watching is recorded in Dolby Surround.
If there is no sound from the center speaker, check the following:
• Make sure that the processor is in the Pro Logic mode. If it is in Phantom or Stereo mode, the center speaker will not play.
• Check the connections between the subwoofer and the center speaker.
If you have low bass output, check the following:
• Experiment with placement of the subwoofer. Remember, place the subwoofer in a corner to get maximum bass output from the system.
• Increase the level of bass, using the remote control.
• Adjust the level control on the rear of the subwoofer.
If you are having trouble picking up radio stations, check the following:
• Make sure the antenna is hooked up properly.
• Depending on your distance from the station’s transmitter, you may need to install an FM antenna on the roof or in the attic.

1. Auto Power - This Auto On/Off switch controls whether the BU1’s Automatic turn-on circuit is active. When the switch is ON , the BU1 will turn itself on, indicated by a green LED, when it is plugged in and receiving a signal. When the BU1 has not received a signal for approximately ten minutes, the unit will revert to the STANDBY mode, indicated by a red LED. When this switch is OFF, the unit will revert to the STANDBY mode and will stay OFF, regardless of input signal. THIS IS NOT A TRUE AC POWER SWITCH AS IT DOES NOT DISCONNECT THE AMPLIFIER FROM THE 120VAC LINE.
2. High Level Inputs - These High Level Inputs are for receivers that do not have line-level “pre-amp out” or “subwoofer out” jacks. When a pair of main or satellite speakers are attached to the OUTPUT terminals, they are driven the full range of frequencies as generated by the music source (receiver, amplifier, etc.)
3. Low Level Input - These left and right Line Level Inputs are normally used when the receiver/processor has line-level “pre-amp out ” or “subwoofer out” jacks. If a single cable mono or subwoofer source is connected to the BU1, a Y-cable must be connected to the subwoofer for full output.
4. Volume Control - This controls the volume level of the subwoofer.
5. Frequency - The Frequency adjustment determines the upper corner roll-off point for the BU1.

TEST PROCEDURE
Equipment needed: Function/signal generator/sweep generator
Integrated Amplifier
Multimeter
Cables - line level (RCA) and speaker cables
General Function UUT = Unit Under Test
1. Connect both right and left line level inputs (RCA) to signal generator and UUT. Use Y-cable if necessary from mono source. VOLUME control should be full counterclockwise.
2. Turn on generator, adjust to 25mV, 50 Hz.
3. Plug in UUT; red LED should be ON. Turn VOLUME control full clockwise.
4. LED should turn Green; immediate bass response should be heard and felt from port tube opening.
5. Turn off generator, turn VOLUME control fully counterclockwise, and disconnect RCA cables.
6. Connect one pair of speaker cables to either high level input terminal on UUT. Cables should be connected to an integrated amplifier fed by the signal generator.
7. Turn on generator and adjust so that speaker level output is 1.0V, 50 Hz. Turn VOLUME control full clockwise.
8. Green LED should light, immediate bass response should be heard and felt from port tube opening.
Sweep Function
1. Follow steps 1 - 4 above, using a sweep generator as a signal source.
2. Sweep generator from 20Hz to 300Hz. Listen to the cabinet and drivers for any rattles, clicks, buzzes or any other noises. If any unusual noises are heard, remove driver and test.
Driver Function
1. Remove driver from cabinet; detach + and - wire clips.
2. Check DC resistance of driver; it should be 3.3 ohms.
3. Connect a pair of speaker cables to driver terminals.  Cables should be connected to an integrated amplifier fed by a signal generator. Turn on generator and adjust so that speaker level output is 5.0V.
4. Sweep generator from 20Hz to 1kHz. Listen to driver for any rubbing, buzzing, or other unusual noises.

EXPLODED VIEW & PARTS
The main power transformer (toroid) part: 150-r1107010in the TSS-SUB4000 is not mounted in the amplifier inside the amp cover, but mounted in the cabinet in a separate location.  To replace the power transformer, it is necessary to remove the woofer from the cabinet. The mounting bolt and transformer itself is mounted on an internal brace; both are accessible through the woofer opening.
Troubleshooting:
To keep the circuit “live” while exposing the amplifier components, the amplifier cannot completely be removed and powered up outside the cabinet due to the power connections to the externally mounted transformer. Instead, an alternate method is to leave the amp cover in place and remove the four Phillips screws holding the amp ass’y to the amp cover. Then the amplifier can be partially removed for access, while maintaining the power connections. Unplugging the LED connection (red/black wires) at the PCB plug will allow the amp to be removed even further.
