These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

How to Discharge the Capacitor on Flash SD P.C.B.
1. Be sure to discharge the capacitor on FLASH SD P.C.B..
2. Be careful of the high voltage circuit on FLASH SD P.C.B. when servicing.
Before disassembling, perform "6.3. Forced full flash emission" for discharging capacitor.
The capacitor also can be discharged according to the following procedures.
Capacitor Discharging Procedure
1. Remove the necessary parts/unit.
2. Put the insulation tube onto the lead part of Resistor (ERG5SJ102:1kΩ /5W).
(an equivalent type of resistor may be used.)
3. Put the resistor between both terminals of capacitor on FLASH SD P.C.B. for approx. 5 seconds.
4. After discharging confirm that the capacitor voltage is lower than 10V using a voltmeter.
How to Replace the Lithium Battery
1. Remove the MIC AMP P.C.B.. (Refer to Disassembly Procedures.)
2. Remove the Lithium battery (Ref. No. “B6401” at component side of MIC AMP P.C.B.) and then replace it into new one.
This Lithium battery is a critical component.
(Type No.: ML-614S/ZTK )
It must never be subjected to excessive heat or discharge.
It must therefore only be fitted in requirement designed specifically for its use.
Replacement batteries must be of same type and manufacture.
They must be fitted in the same manner and location as the original battery, with the correct polarity contacts observed.
Do not attempt to re-charge the old battery or re-use it for any other purpose.
It should be disposed of in waste products destined for burial rather than incineration.
Service Mode
Set the mode switch “Motion Picture Recording” mode.
While the power is turned OFF, keep pressing the “Power” button, “Zoom lever” to W side and “intelligent auto/Manual” button for more than 3 seconds until the top screen of the Service Mode Menu being displayed.

Press the power button and turn off.
Factory Setting
1. Set the mode switch “Motion Picture Recording” mode.
2. While the power is turned OFF, keep pressing the “Power” button, “Zoom lever” to W side and “intelligent auto/Manual” button for more than 3 seconds until the top screen of the Service Mode Menu being displayed.
3. Touch the [ 1 ] of LCD.
4. Touch the [ YES ] of LCD.
5. After few seconds “END” is displayed on LCD monitor. Cutting of battery connection or AC power supply connection as a completion of the “FACTORY SETTINGS”.
The factory settings clean up and/or refresh the following settings.
1. MENU, MODE, ADJUSTMENT VALUE.
2. SD card format.
3. Reset the folder number and file number of still pictures.
(Setting the folder number is 100, and file number is 0.)
4. Clear the mechanism lock information.
5. Clear the service mode information contents.
6. Close the lens cover
7. Initialize the VIERA Link Physical Address

Formatting HDD
When HDD is exchanged, format HDD as the procedure below.
Without formatting, the error message appears on the LCD display when accessing HDD.
Formatting procedure
Rotate the mode dial to select PLAY.
Select [HDD] in [MEDIA SELECT].
1. Press the MENU button, then select [SETUP]  > [FORMAT HDD] > [YES] and press the joystick.
2. When the confirmation message appears, select [YES], then press the joystick.
When formatting is complete, press the MENU button to exit the message screen.
Note:
During formatting, do not turn this unit off.
When you format the HDD, use a battery with sufficient battery power or the AC adaptor.
During formatting, do not cause any vibrations or impacts to this unit.
Service Menu
To enter the Service Menu
1. Turn the Power on and set the Mode Dial to [VIDEO RECORDING MODE].
2. Push the [OIS], [JOYSTICK CONTROL LEFT] and [iA] simultaneously for 3 seconds (with no SD Card inserted)
Note:
If a SD Card is inserted, the above operation will not work.
To select the Item of Service Menu
1. Press [JOYSTICK CONTROL UP/DOWN] to select item [1], [2], [3], [4], [9], [10], [14] or [15].
2. Press [JOYSTICK CONTROL RIGHT] to display [YES/NO] screen.
3. Press [JOYSTICK CONTROL UP/DOWN] to select [YES].
4. Press [JOYSTICK CONTROL CENTER] to end.
How to set the Default Setting
1. Turn the Power on and set the Mode Dial to [VIDEO RECORDING MODE].
2. When pressing [OIS], [JOYSTICK CONTROL RIGHT] and [iA] for more than 3 minutes simultaneously (with no SD Card inserted), the items below are set to the Default Setting.
1. Menu, Mode, Adjusted Value
2. Card format
3. Reset of picture files and directory number (Set the picture record file number to 1)
4. Clear the information of Mechanism Lock
5. Set the time setting to no-setting
How to Replace the Lithium Battery (PROCEDURE)
1. Remove the LCD BL P.C.B..
2. Remove the Lithium Battery “ML-614S/ZTE” and then replace the new one.
Note:
The lithium battery is a critical component. (Type No.: ML-614S/ZTE Manufactured by Panasonic.)
It must never be subjected to excessive heat or discharge.
It must therefore only be fitted in equipment designed specifically for its use.
Replacement batteries must be of the same type and manufacture.
They must be fitted in the same manner and location as the original battery, with the correct polarity contacts observed.
Do not attempt to re-charge the old battery or re-use it for any other purpose.
It should be disposed of in waste products destined for burial rather than incineration.

SERVICE MENU
The SERVICE(CAMERA mode), DIAGNOSTIC(VCR mode) and ADJUST(VCR mode) menu can be displayed as follows.
Press the button in order of “ADUB button” > “STOP button” > “MODE CHK button” > “MENU button”, SERVICE menu in CAMERA mode, DIAGNOSTIC and the ADJUST menu in VCR mode can be displayed in addition to a setup menus.
Next, Tilt the OPERATION lever in the UP( PLAY) or DOWN ( STOP) direction, select the DIAGNOSTIC or ADJUST menu, press SET(STILL) of the OPERATION lever to open the DIAGNOSTIC or ADJUST menu.
AUDIO FILTER
ON: The mechanism noise cancellation function operates by IC3001(DUO).
OFF: The mechanism noise cancellation function does not operates by IC3001(DUO).
Factory default setting is “ON”.
DIAGNOSTIC MENU
How to display the Error Rate.
This unit can be displayed Error Rate and it shows the playing condition of the VCR.
In case of the error rate is displayed, BER DISPLAY and SAMPLE SPEED mode is select on DIAGNOSTIC menu.
Setting item for LISTA Measurement
ATF GAIN
The speed of the tape changes if this item set to “ON” for the ATF sensitivity confirmation.
After selected “ON”, By pressing SET(STILL) of OPERATION LEVER, enter the adjustment mode and then exit the menu once. The VTR mode is operated when the menu mode is exited temporarily. The screen below is displayed.

LINEARITY
The ATF sensitivity changes if this item set to “ON” for the LINEARITY confirmation.
After selected “ON”, By pressing SET(STILL) of OPERATION LEVER, enter the adjustment mode and then exit the menu once. The VTR mode is operated when the menu mode is exited temporarily. The screen below is displayed.

Sony F65:  Error Messages and causes 
If the battery voltage drops or an error is detected when power is applied or during operation, the corresponding indicator lights up/flashes and a message appears on the subdisplay. The error details are displayed in the selfdiagnostics on settings page 3 on the subdisplay and in the viewfinder.
Warnings and error messages occurring on the SR-R4 are also displayed in the self-diagnostics field.

occurred with the Recorder connector. Clean the
recorder connector.


Mounting the SR-R4
Always turn off the camera power supply when mounting the SR-R4.
The recorder connector for connecting the SR-R4 is an optical connector. Attach the connector cap on the optical connector when not connected to an SR-R4 to protect the connector. After removing the cap, store it in the position shown in the following figure for safekeeping.
When mounting the SR-R4, fix the camera head on a tripod in advance to keep the camera head stable.
When the camera is used with the SR-R4 docked, make sure that the camera is securely fixed and stable so that it will not fall over.
Attaching a Filter
1. Place the filter template (metallic disc) on the gel filter, then trim the filter around the edge of the filter template.
2. Remove the ring from the filter holder, place the filter on the ring, and then attach the holder.
3. Align the protrusion on the mounting tool with the notch on the filter holder, then insert the holder into the tool.
4. Align the notch on the filter mount with the protrusion on the filter holder, insert the mounting tool onto the filter mount, and then turn clockwise until it clicks into place.
5. Pull the mounting tool straight off. The mounting tool separates from the camera, and the filter is mounted in place.
To remove the filter
1. Align the protrusion on the mounting tool with the notch on the filter holder, then press the tool onto the filter mount. Press the tool until it clicks into place.
2. Rotate the mounting tool counterclockwise, then lift the tool off the camera.
The filter holder is removed with the mounting tool.

ARRI ALEXA:  Power Management
When using the BAT connector and one or more onboard battery adapters simultaneously, the camera’s power management system ensures that the power source with the highest voltage level is used. When the voltage level of one power source drops below the level of the other, or a power source is disconnected from the camera, the power management system automatically switches to the other power source, avoiding shutdown of the camera.
For example, a 12 V onboard battery can be used as backup for the main 24 V battery. Using a 12 V onboard battery in addition to the main 24 V battery also allows for quick switchover to handheld mode - the power cable can simply be disconnected from the BAT connector.
When using two onboard battery adapters (with batteries in parallel - one on top and one on the back), the camera will treat them as a single source. When used this way, the load is spread across two batteries, creating a strong power source.
BAT Connector
The BAT connector is the primary power input on the ALEXA. It is a Fischer 2-pin socket located at the back of the camera on the cameraright side.
The socket accepts power cables KC-20S and KC-29S. The cables can either be connected to the mains unit NG 12/26R or to 24 V cine-style batteries with three-pin XLR outputs.
Mains Unit NG 12/26 R
Use of the mains unit is recommended for shooting in the studio and when using electronic accessories with high power consumption.
To power the ALEXA using the Mains Unit NG 12/26 R:
1. Set the correct mains voltage on the mains unit using the fuse on the back of the unit. For example, set it to 220 V if the AC mains power source is 220 V.
2. Connect the mains unit to AC mains power.
3. Ensure that the camera power is turned off.
4. Set the voltage switch on the mains unit to 26 V.
5. Connect the battery cable KC-20S or KC-29S (spiral cable) to the power supply socket on the camera and the 26 V socket on the mains unit.
Cine-Style Batteries
Any 24 V cine-style battery with a three-pin XLR output can be used to power the camera through a KC-20S or a KC-29S battery cable.
To connect the battery to the camera:
1. Ensure that the main switch on the camera is off.
2. Connect the battery cable KC-20S or KC-29S (spiral cable) to the power supply socket on the camera and the 28V output on the battery.
Onboard Batteries
The camera can be equipped with adapters for either V-Lock or Gold
Mount video-style batteries. When a battery equipped with the TIprotocol for battery communication is used, the ALEXA will display remaining capacity as a percentage on the Home screen. For these batteries, the user does not need to set the battery warning level.
Four different adapters are available:
BAB-G: Battery Adapter Back for Gold Mount batteries
BAB-V: Battery Adapter Back for V-Lock batteries
BAT-G: Battery Adapter Top for Gold Mount batteries
BAT-V: Battery Adapter Top for V-Lock batteries
V-Lock Batteries
V-Lock batteries from different manufacturers may be used on the ALEXA. When batteries from manufacturers such as ID-X and Bebop, are used, their remaining capacity will be displayed as a percentage on the Home screen.
To attach a V-Lock battery:
1. Align the v-shaped wedge on the battery with the v-shaped notch on the battery plate.
2. Press the battery downwards until you hear a click.
3. Check that the battery is securely mounted on the battery plate.
To release a V-Lock battery:
1. Press the release button on the camera-left side or top of the battery (manufacturer dependent)
2. While pressing the release button, slide the battery upwards.
ALEXA with BAB-V and V-Mount battery
Gold Mount Batteries
If the ALEXA is equipped with a Gold Mount, Anton/Bauer batteries can be used. Their remaining capacity will be displayed as a percentage on the Home screen.
To attach a Gold Mount battery:
1. Align the three pins on the back of the battery to the three corresponding holes on the battery plate.
2. Press the battery to camera-right until you hear a click.
3. Check that the battery is securely mounted on the battery plate.
To release a Gold Mount battery:
1. Press the release button on the camera-left side of the battery plate.
2. While pressing the release button, slide the battery camera-left, and
pull it straight out.
ALEXA with BAB-G and a Gold Mount battery
Power Outputs
The ALEXA, ALEXA M, ALEXA XT, ALEXA HD and ALEXA XT M have two 24 V power outputs and one 12 V power output for accessories. ALEXA Plus, ALEXA Plus 4:3, ALEXA HD Plus, ALEXA XT Plus, ALEXA Studio and ALEXA XT Studio models have three 24 V power outputs and one 12V power output.
Powering 12 V Accessories
One 12 V output with a 2-pin LEMO connector is located on the right side of the camera. It is limited to 12 V and can supply a device with a current of up to 2.2 A, depending on the camera power supply.
Powering 24 V Accessories
Two 24 V remote start/stop (RS) outputs with 3-pin Fischer connectors are located on the right side of the camera. They can supply two devices with a combined load of up to 2.2 A (shared with the EXT connector power out), depending on the camera power supply. When the camera is powered from a source with a voltage below 24 V, they output 24 V. If the camera's power source supplies more than 24 V, this voltage level is also present on the RS outputs. Besides powering accessories, the RS outputs can also be used to send a remote start/stop signal to the camera.
Firmware - Software Update Packets (SUPs)
To update the camera to a new SUP:
1. Copy the new SUP into the Firmware folder on an SD card formatted in the ALEXA.
2. Load the SD card into the camera.
3. In the System menu, select Firmware.
4. Select Select update file.
5. Select the new SUP from the list on the FIRMWARE (SD CARD) screen.
6. Press both UPDATE buttons simultaneously to update the camera's firmware
Note: Update duration may differ between camera models. Do not interrupt the update once it has started. Make sure the camera power supply will remain sufficient for the duration of the update (approx. 15 minutes).
Select update file:  Select to update the camera’s firmware. If an SD card containing update files is loaded in the camera, you can select an update file from the list and perform an update.
Current version: Select to display the release code of current installed firmware.
Licensed features: Select to manage licensed features on the INSTALLED LICENSES screen.
To save the hardware info file:
1. In the System menu, select Firmware.
2. Select Licensed features.
3. On the INSTALLED LICENSES screen, press the HW INFO button.
4. Press the SAVE button. The hardware info file will be saved on the SD card in the root directory. It will look like sn####-AlexaHardware.ipkg. The INSTALLED LICENSES screen displays a list of installed licenses.
New license can be installed from the SD card.
To install new licenses after purchase:
1. Copy the license key - it will have the suffix .lic - into the Licenses folder on an SD card formatted on the ALEXA. Load the SD card into the camera.
2. In the System menu, select Firmware.
3. Select Licensed features.
4. Press the INSTALL button.
5. On the LICENSE FILES (SD CARD) screen, select the license to be installed. The licensed feature enabled by the license key is described at the bottom of the screen for each license selected.
6. Press the jog.
