These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

DISASSEMBLING PROCEDURE 
How to remove Computer feet
The computer includes 4 rubber feet that attach to the base enclosure in the locations illustrated below. The front rubber feet (1) are heat-staked to the base enclosure. The 2 rear rubber feet (2) must be removed to access top cover screws and are included in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 698089-001
How to remove Battery
Before disassembling the computer, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
Remove the battery:
1. Turn the computer upside down on a flat surface.
2. Slide the battery release latch (1) to release the battery.
3. Pivot the front edge of the battery (2) up and back.
4. Remove the battery (3) from the computer.
To insert the battery:
1. Align the tabs on the rear edge of the battery with the notches on the rear edge of the battery bay.
2. Pivot the front edge of the battery down into the battery bay until it is seated. (The battery
release latch will automatically lock into place.)
How to remove Hard drive
Before removing the hard drive, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery
Remove the hard drive:
1. Loosen the Phillips PM2.5×4.5 captive screw (1) that secures the service cover to the computer.
2. Slide the battery release latch (2) to release the service cover.
3. Slide the service cover (3) toward the front of the computer.
4. Remove the service cover (4).
The service cover is included in the Service Cover Kit, spare part number 698086-001.
5. Disconnect the hard drive connector cable (1) from the system board.
6. Remove the four Phillips PM2.0×4.5 screws (2) that secure the hard drive to the computer.
7. Use the hard drive tab (3) to remove the hard drive by lifting it straight up and away from the computer.
How to remove Optical drive
Before removing the optical drive, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery
5. Remove the service cover
Remove the optical drive:
1. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×5.5 screw (1) that secures the optical drive to the computer.
2. Use a flat-blade screw driver or similar tool to press on the optical drive bracket tab (2) to release the optical drive.
3. Remove the optical drive (3) from the computer.
How to remove RTC battery
Before removing the RTC battery, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery
5. Remove the service cover
Remove the RTC battery:
Use a thin, non-conductive tool (1) to remove the RTC battery (2) from the socket on the system board.
How to remove Keyboard
Before removing the keyboard, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery
a. Service cover
b. Optical drive
c. WLAN module
Remove the keyboard:
1. Remove the two Phillips PM2.5×6.5 screws that secure the keyboard to the computer.
2. Rest and secure the computer on its left side.
3. Partially open the computer.
4. Insert a screw driver or similar thin tool into the keyboard release opening in the wireless module compartment, and then press on the back of the keyboard until the keyboard disengages from the computer.
5. Turn the computer right-side up with the front toward you.
6. Open the computer.
7. Lift the rear edge of the keyboard (1) until the keyboard rests at an angle, and then swing the top edge of the keyboard (2) up and forward until it rests upside down on the palm rest.
8. Release the zero insertion force (ZIF) connector (1) to which the keyboard cable is attached, and then disconnect the keyboard cable (2) from the system board.
9. Release the ZIF connector to which the keyboard backlight cable (4) is attached, and then disconnect the keyboard backlight cable (4) from the system board.
10. Remove the keyboard (5).
How to remove Top cover
Before removing the top cover, follow these steps:
1. Turn off the computer. If you are unsure whether the computer is off or in Hibernation, turn the computer on, and then shut it down through the operating system.
2. Disconnect the power from the computer by unplugging the power cord from the computer.
3. Disconnect all external devices from the computer.
4. Remove the battery
a. Hard drive
b. Optical drive
c. WLAN module
d. Keyboard
Remove the top cover:
1. Remove the two rear rubber feet (1).
The two rear rubber feet are included in the Rubber Kit, spare part number 698089-001.
2. Remove the eight Phillips PM2.5×6.5 screws (2) that secure the display assembly to the top cover.
3. Remove the Phillips PM2.0×2.0 screws in the optical drive bay (1) and the hard drive bay (2).
4. Turn the computer right side up, with the front toward you.
5. Open the computer.
6. Release the ZIF connector to which the TouchPad button board cable is attached, and then disconnect the TouchPad button board cable from the system board.
7. Remove the seven Phillips PM2.5×6.5 screws that secure the top cover to the base enclosure.
8. Lift the front edge of the top cover (1), and then swing it up and back until the left and right sides detach from the base enclosure.
9. Remove the top cover (2).
