These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

Y-SUSTAIN FLOATING GROUND [FG15V] AND [FG5V] CHECK

TIP: Some Circuit components are on the back of the board. To Test these voltages, remove the board completely, supply Ground and any 5V supply to M5V fuse FS201. Ground OE Jumper J393.
Floating Ground checks must be made from Floating Ground. Use far left hand top 4 screws of the Y-SUS.




Source FG5V (Floating Ground 5V). D509 cathode.
Source FG15V (Floating Ground 15V). D508 cathode.
Location:  Back Side of Board.



Y-SUSTAIN 18V GENERATION CHECK


Voltage Measurements for the Y-SUS Board
18V Test Point Used in the Y-SUS for Waveform Creation and Leaves the Y-SUS board on P101 pins 1~3 to the Control Board. Checked at Cathode Side D506.
Run: 18.24V Standby: 0V Diode Check: 1.14V


Y-SUSTAIN FUSE INFORMATION:  There are 3 fuses on this board.


FS201 (M5V) 4V/125V
FS201 Protects M5V Used for 18V, (D506), FG5V and FG15V Creation (D508 and D509). Also, M5V leaves the Y-SUS on P101 for the Control board and for the Z-SUS.
Diode Check 1.19V With Board Disconnected. 0.65V with board connected.


FS202 (VS) 4V/250V; protects [VS].  Diode Check Open With Board Disconnected or Connected.


FS203 (VA) 10A/125V.  FS203 Protects VA which leaves the Y-SUS on P203. Diode Check Open With Board Disconnected or Connected.
