These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

Symptom: Vertical line Block

Cause: Countermeasure:
  1. Open or contact failure of Data flexible Cable àClean, Reconnect or exchange connector.
  2. Failure in Data IC à Exchange PDP
  3. Failure in Data Relay Board à Exchange the Data Relay Board.
  4. Failure in multiple Data IC à Exchange PDP.
Symptom: Horizontal lines
Cause: Countermeasure:
  1. Failure in Scan IC on Scan Relay Board - Exchange Scan Relay Board.Open or contact failure of Scan Flexible Cable (CN01-CN04) at output side of Scan Relay Board (U,D). à Clean, Reconnect or exchange connector.
  2. Contact failure of connector between Scan Board and Scan Relay Board. à Clean, Reconnect or exchange connector.
  3. Short between terminals of Scan IC due to screw dust à Clean around the terminals.
Symptom: No Picture (Priming flash).
Cause: Countermeasure:
1F302 open. à Exchange High Voltage Board.
  • If the connector CN7709 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RU ) is short-circuited between Pin 1 (or 2) and GND (Pin 3 or 4) à Data IC is broken à Exchange PDP.
  • If the connector CN7709 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RU) is short-circuited between Pin 5 (or 6) and GND (Pin 3 or 4) à Data Relay Board (LU) or (RU) is failed ]
  •  If the connector CN7608 disconnected from Data Relay Board (LU) is short-circuited between Pin 1 and GND (Pin 2 or 6) à Data Relay Board (LU) is failed à Exchange Data Relay Board (LU).
  • If the connector CN7708 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RU) is short-circuited between Pin 1 and GND (Pin 2 or 6) à Data Relay Board (RU) is failed à Exchange Data Relay Board (RU).
  • If the connector CN7909 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RD) is short-circuited between Pin 1 (or 2) and GND (Pin 3 or 4) à Data IC is broken à Exchange PDP.
  • If the connector CN7909 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RD) is short-circuited between Pin 5 (or 6) and GND (Pin 3 or 4) à Data Relay Board (LD) or (RD) is failed]
  • If the connector CN7808 disconnected from Data Relay Board (LD) is short-circuited between Pin 8 and GND (Pin 3 or 7) à Data Relay Board (LD) is failed à Exchange Data Relay Board (LD).
  • If the connector CN7908 disconnected from Data Relay Board (RD) is short-circuited between Pin 8 and GND (Pin 3 or 7) à Data Relay Board (RD) is failed à Exchange Data Relay Board (RD).
Symptom: No Picture. (Priming doesn’t flash if W-X terminals are short-circuited.)
Cause/Countermeasure:  No Diode characteristic à Exchange High Voltage Board.
Symptom: Abnormalities in a picture.
ONE OR MORE VERTICAL BANDS, MULTIPLE VERTICAL BANDS
OUT OF SYNCHRONIZATION OR DUPLICATION
RECTANGULAR COLOR SHEAR, COLOR DISCREPANCY, SHEAR IN DISPLAY
TRANSPARENT VERTICAL BAND
MOSAIC
A NUMBER OF LATERAL LINES, REGULAR NOISE
Cause: Countermeasure :
  • Contact failure of connector adjacent to Digital Board or short circuit due to conductive obstacle. à Clean or Reconnect.
  • Failure in circuit on Digital Board.  à  Failure in Digital Board.

POWER OFF
Symptom: No Picture (Priming doesn't flash)  >  Power off.

Cause | Countermeasure:
  • F301 open à Exchange High Voltage Board.
  • FU801 open à Exchange Digital Board.
Cause | Countermeasure :

  • If short-circuited, disconnect connector between High Voltage Board and Scan Relay Board and,
  • Short between NEGA-POSI on High Voltage Board  à Exchange High Voltage Board.
  • Short between NEGA-POSI on Scan Relay Board (U) à Exchange Scan Relay Board (U).
  • Short between NEGA-POSI on Scan Relay Board (D) à Exchange Scan Relay Board (D).
  • Symptom: No Picture à Power off (Priming flash).
  • Cause | Countermeasure: R91 open à  Exchange High Voltage Board.
Symptom: Failure in Writing  à Power off.
DARK AND ROUGH PICTURE
MANY LIGHT SPOTS ON DARK PORTION
WHITE PATTERN EVEN IN NO SIGNAL -- POWER OFF
Cause | Countermeasure: 
  • R43,R61 open à Exchange High Voltage Board.
  • R150 open  à  Exchange High Voltage Board.
