However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

How to upgrade the software, How to enter the area code, disassemble procedure, How to initialize, Power amplifier and Power board [SMPS] schematic

Disassemble procedure

Be careful to follow the disassembly sequence described in the manual. Otherwise, the product may be damaged.
• Be sure to carefully read and understand the safety instructions before performing any work as the IC chips on the PCB are vulnerable to static electricity.
• In order to assemble reverse the order of disassembly.

Unfasten 4 screws on the rear side.
: BH,+,B,M3,L10,ZPC(BLK),SWRCH18A

Slide the COVER-TOP back to remove.
Pull and lift up COVER-TOP rear side

[Be careful not to make any scratches as you remove them.]

Disconnect the FPC cable between the COVER-FRONT ASSY and the MAIN PCB



1) Loosen the bottom and side clips and tilt up.
2) Lift the COVER-FRONT at a 45 degree angle upward. then the hooks on the top side can be automatically removed


Disconnect the DECK cable from the MAIN-PCB.
Unfasten the screws of 4 points around the. : BH,+,-,B,M3,L6,ZPC(WHT),SWRCH18A,RF
Remove the DECK from the COVER-BOTTOM.

For WiI-Fi, unfasten 1 connector to MAIN ASSY and 1 screw.

To remove the MAIN+AMP ASSY, PCB unfasten 5 screws on the board and 2 on the rear.

Remove the bridge connection between the main and power, remove the fan cable connection and remove the metal support post in the center.
Remove the MAIN from the case.

Unplug the FAN cable connected to the main board and then remove the main board from the case

Before pull out the SMPS PCB, Unplug the connector

For SMPS, PCB unfasten 4 screws on bottom-side.

How to check Firmware version

Method 1
- Step 1: Open the tray.
- Step 2: Press and hold “INFO” button on the remote for 5 seconds.
- Then, you will see below screen.

Method 2 (For only Back End version)
- Select the Settings on the menu.
- Settings→ Support→ Contact Samsung
Description for the meaning
- Front : System micom
- S/W : BACKEND Firmware
- Loader : Loader Firmware
- Region : BD region code / DVD region code
- Macrovision : Macrovision version
- Model : Model name
- Main Touch IC : touch key firmware
- HDMI RX : HDMI Firmware (Only for HT-E5500 series)


How to update firmware

The Software Upgrade menu allows you to upgrade the product’s software for performance improvements or additional services. You can upgrade in four ways:
• By Internet
• By USB
• By Disc
• By Downloaded (File)
The four methods are explained below.

By Internet
To upgrade by Internet, follow these steps:
1) Select By Internet, and then press the ENTER button. The Connecting to Server message appears.
2) If there is a download available, the Download pop-up appears with a progress bar and the download starts.
3) When the download is complete, the Upgrade Query window appears with three choices:
Upgrade Now, Upgrade Later, or Don’t Upgrade.
4) If you select Upgrade Now, the product upgrades the software, turns off, and then turns on automatically.
5) If you do not make a selection in one minute or select Upgrade Later, the product stores the new upgrade software.
You can upgrade the software later using the By Downloaded function.
6) If you select Don’t Upgrade, the product cancels the upgrade.
NOTE: Your product must be connected to the Internet to use the By Internet function.
The upgrade is complete when the product turns off, and then turns on again by itself.
Never turn the product off or back on manually during the update process.

[If you want to cancel the upgrade while the upgrade software is downloading, press the ENTER button]

By USB
To upgrade by USB, follow these steps:
1) Visit www.samsung.com/bluraysupport
2) Download the latest USB software upgrade zip archive to your computer.
3) Unzip the zip archive to your computer. You should have a single folder with the same name as the zip file.
4) Copy the folder to a USB flash drive.
5) Make sure the disc tray is empty, and then insert the USB flash drive into the USB port of the product.
6) In the product’s menu, go to Settings > Support > Software Upgrade.
7) Select By USB.
NOTE: The disc tray must be empty when you upgrade the software using the USB Host jack.
When the software upgrade is done, check the software details in the software Upgrade menu.
Do not turn off the product during the software upgrade. It may cause the product to malfunction.
Software upgrades using the USB Host jack must be performed with a USB memory flash stick only.

By Disc
To upgrade by Disc, follow these steps:
1) Visit www.samsung.com/bluraysupport.
2) Download the latest disc software upgrade zip archive to your computer.
3) Unzip the zip archive to your computer. You should have a single folder with the same name as the zip file.
4) Write the folder onto a disc. We recommend a CD-R or DVD-R.
5) Finalize the disc before you remove it from your computer.
6) Insert the disc into product.
7) In the product’s menu, go to Settings > Support > Software upgrade.
8) Select By Disc.
NOTE: When the system upgrade is done, check the software details in the software Upgrade menu.
Do not turn off the product during the Software Upgrade. It may cause the product malfunction.

By Downloaded
The By Downloaded option lets you upgrade using a file the product downloaded earlier but you decided not to install
immediately or a file downloaded by the product in Standby Mode (See Download in Standby Mode below).
To upgrade By Downloaded, follow these steps:
1) If upgrade software has been downloaded, you will see the software version number to the right of By Downloaded.
2) Select By Downloaded, and then press the ENTER button.
3) The product displays a message asking if you want to upgrade. Select Yes. The product begins the upgrade.
4) When the update is complete, the product turns off automatically, and then turns on.
NOTE: When the system upgrade is done, check the software details in the software Upgrade menu.
Do not turn off the product during the software Upgrade. It may cause the product to malfunction.
To use the By Downloaded function, your product must be connected to the Internet.

Download in Standby Mode
You can set the Download in Standby Mode function so that the product downloads new upgrade software when it is in Standby mode. In Standby mode, the product is off, but its Internet connection is active. This allows the product to download upgrade software automatically, when you are not using it.
To set Download in Standby Mode, follow these steps:
1) Press the ▲▼ buttons to select Download in Standby Mode, and then press the ENTER button.
2) Select On or Off.
Off : If you select Off, the product will notify you with a pop up message when new upgrade software is available.
On : If you select On, the product will automatically download new upgrade software when it is in Standby mode with the power off. If it downloads new upgrade software, the product will ask you if you want to install it when you turn the product on.
NOTE: To use the Download in Standby Mode function, your product must be connected to the Internet.

(Cold Start Method (Initialize Setup)

1)This is useful for forgotten Parental Lock password.
2) Press “■” button on the front panel for over 5 seconds while ‘no disc’ status.
3) Then, VFD sign : “INIT” → Power will be turned off automatically.
4) System Micom Cold Start :
During Stand-By, just press the Stop Button "■” of remote-controller for over 5 seconds. Then, VFD sign : "RESET".II

Inserting the Region Code after replacing the Main PCB

NOTE
• After replacing the Main PCB and System Micom (IC23), the region code should be inserted.
• The unit will not work properly if you do not insert the correct region code.
• You must use the remote control

Select the "AUX" mode and then press the "Tuner Memory" button on the remote control for 4-5 seconds

You should see the “T-MODE” message display on the VFD. Press the “▼” direction button during this message.
NOTE: The “T-MODE” indicator on the VFD only appears for a very short time.

You can see “TEST - -” on the VFD. Insert the number “46” to select the Region Code.


After step (3), you can see “- - -” on the VFD.
Insert the Region Code (see Table on next page) corresponding to the model and area in which you reside in using the “0-9” buttons on the remote control. And then turn off the power.

In order to check if you inputted correctly, please do Number 1, 2, 3 again and then during “TEST - -” MODE insert number 47. After that, you can check the option code which you inserted. For example, you can see “000US5”. It means that you inserted region code “000” and the region is USA which supports 5.1CH Audio output. If it is “047EU2”, it means that you inserted region code “047” and the region is Europe which supports 2.1ch Audio output.

SONY PLAYSTATION 4 – HOW TO REPLACE THE BLU-RAY DRIVE

PlayStation 4 – How to replace the Blu-ray drive


Sony PlayStation 4
Flip the PS4 over on its top.
Remove the four stickers on the back of the PS4.
Remove the three 9mm T9 Torx screws on the back of the system.
Remove the bottom panel by lifting the front piece up and sliding the
panel towards the back.
Remove the three 9mm T9 Torx screws.
Remove the two 4cm Phillips head #1 screws.
Lift straight up on the power supply.
Remove the 5 wire plug that is attached from the power supply to the motherboard.
You can now fully remove the power supply from the system.
Disconnect the ribbon wire from the optical drive by pressing down on the metal release tab and gently
pulling the ribbon wire. This should not require force.
Disconnect the same ribbon wire from the motherboard; making sure
you're pressing down on the metal release tab and gently pulling the ribbon wire.
Remove the wifi antenna cable attached to the motherboard.
Remove the optical drive four wire plug from the motherboard by pulling straight out.
Remove the four 9mm Torx T9 screw attached to the wifi antenna and optical drive.

REGION CODE
This unit has a regional code printed on the rear of the unit. 
This unit can play only BD-ROM or DVD discs labeled same as the rear of the unit or “ALL”.
Area Code
Enter the code of the area whose standards were used to rate the DVD video disc, based on the list.
If you forget your password
If you forget your password, you can clear it using the following steps:
1.  Remove any disc that might be in the player.
2.  Select [Password] option in the [Setup] menu.
3. Use Number buttons to enter “210499”. The password is cleared.
[If you make a mistake before pressing ENTER, press CLEAR. Then input the correct password.]
DVD Rating
Blocks playback of rated DVD based on their content. (Not all discs are rated.)
[Rating 1-8]
Rating one (1) has the most restrictions and rating eight (8) is the least restrictive.
[Unlock]
If you select [Unlock], parental control is not active and the disc plays in full.
Blu-ray Disc Rating
Set an age limit of BD-ROM play. Use number buttons to input an age limit for BD-ROM viewing.
[255] All BD-ROM can be played.
[0-254] Prohibits play of BD-ROM with corresponding ratings recorded on them.

Initialize to Factory Settings BDP-S185 _ Australian / NZ Model / Chinese Model / UK Model/ Russian Model.
BDP-S185 / S186 _ AEP Model.
BDP-S185/BX18 _ Canadian Model / US Model.
SERVICE MODE
OPTION 1
The set disconnect AC, and Push front panel key ([OPEN/CLOSE] + [PLAY] + [STOP]) and AC IN The keys will be released if the screen in service mode is displayed on a monitor.  Control via Remote Controller.
OPTION 2
Connect the set to AC, and wait initialization cycle complete. POWER ON SET INTO NORMAL MODE. WHEN CROSS MEDIA BAR APPEAR.
Use Sony BDP remote controller, key in the following SIRCS code.
[DISPLAY] => [ 0 ] => [ 2 ] => [ 1 ] => [SUBTITLE]
While sending of SIRCS code, wait time between each key code could not send later than 3 second.
If second waiting is exceeded user have to re-key in the SIRCS code.
If SIRCS enter is successful, set will auto boot up. The screen of service mode is displayed on a monitor.
Control via Remote Controller.
Diag
The unit test of the device mounted on the Main Board.
Display Error Log
Error log is displayed.  The displayed logs can be saved in a USB memory.
Factory Initialize
Return the entire player setting to their factory defaults.
Network
Confirm Wired Network connection.
Version Up
The set updates by Update DISC.
System Information
System information of the set is displayed.   The Information on a soft version and drive information, etc. is displayed.
EMC Test Mode
Not used.
Drive
Write Drive OP Data and check drive.
HDD Mode
Not used.

COMMON PROBLEMS
The player won’t power up (the Power indicator is not lit):
*Check that the player’s Ac power cord is properly plugged into the player’s Power cord connector.
* Check that the player’s Ac power cord is plugged into a working Ac out let and that the Ac outlet is not controlled by a switch.
* Make sure that the Master Power switch (on the player’s rear panel) is in the “On” position.
The disc does not play:
* Check that the disc is inserted correctly (label side up).
* Check that the disc is the correct type: Bd-video (single-layer or double-layer), DVD-video, DVD +R/+RW, DVD-R/-RW, cd dA (cd digital audio), cd-R/RW.
Other disc types will not play.
No picture:
* Check the connection between the player and the TV.
* Check that the TV is turned on and that it is set to the correct input source.
* Confirm that all of the choices made in the display settings menu are correct for your TV.
* Check that the TV is hdcP-compliant. The player cannot be used with a TV that is not hdcP-compliant.
No sound:
* Check that the HDMI and/or coaxial digital connections are properly made.
* If you’re using the coaxial digital connection, check that the digital audio settings on the connected device have been properly set.
* If you’re using only the HDMI connection, check that the HDMI audio settings on the connected device have been properly set.
* If you’re using only the HDMI connection, check that the BDT 3/BDT 30’s HDMI Audio Output is set to “On.
The picture appears in the wrong aspect ratio:
Change the Aspect Ratio setting in the display settings menu to match the TV.
There is noise or other interference in the picture while playing a Blu-ray disc recording or DVD:
Check that the disc surface is clean and not scratched.
Cannot access media on a connected USB device:
• check that the device is formatted in the FAT32 file system. Other file systems are not compatible with the BDT 3/BDT 30.
The player does not respond to remote-control commands:
* Replace both remote-control batteries with fresh ones, and make sure that they are installed correctly.
* Hold the remote control closer to the player.
* Check that the player’s remote sensor is in the remote control’s line of sight.
* Make sure that the protective shipping film has been removed from the player’s front panel.
The player does not respond to commands, or it behaves in an erratic way:
* Unplug the player’s power cord from the AC outlet, wait 30 seconds, and plug it back in.
* The Ø symbol appears on the screen when you press a remote-control button:
* The selected function is not permitted at the time you press the button.

BU & BU Assy Replacement Procedure.
Applicable to Sony BDP-BX37/S270/S370/S373/S470.
BU REPLACEMENT

Before BU Replacement.
* Enter Service Mode: Press < OPEN/CLOSE >, < PLAY >,< STOP > and plug in AC Power.
* Inside *Service Mode Menu Select [8] Drive.
* Inside *Drive Select [7] OP Check Menu.
* Inside *OP Check Menu Select [3] dIOP then press 'ENTER'.
* Specification Diop BD: 6mA DVD, CD: 9mA.  [If no - IOP out of specification need BU replacement > Optical Block Unit (BU) replace] {If Yes AC Power OFF}.

BU (Optical Block) Repair. BDP 5G (BDP-S370) series component structure is as same as conventional DVD Players.   However BD player requires precise read out functions and also secure contents Protection system.  Since above requirement, it is necessary to set/adjust BU data to EEPROM.
The following cases need Adjustments;
(1) Replace BU (MB is original)
(2) Replace MB (BU is original)
(3) Replace both BU and MB.
JIG Requirement
# Digital camera (recommend with macro mode)
# Barcode decoder (5GBUJIG) installed in JIG PC’s
# USB memory
# ESD work bench.
The servo adjustment procedure will be carried out during OP data writing.  There is no manual adjustment procedure. LD ON TIME history doesn’t carry over. Do not touch any optical block parts, Turn Table and during replacing. BD Laser diode is very sensitive.
BU Adjustment.
* Remove the defective BU from Loading Assy and also remove BU insulator (4pcs)
* Unpack new BU and take OP Data Barcode photo by camera.
* Assemble BU with Insulators to Loading Assy (tighten screw with 2kgf)
* Decode the OP Data Barcode photo using BDBUDEC.exe and save the test data to USB memory (File Name: BuData.txt)
* Enter Service Mode and insert USB memory to USB connector.
* Select [8] Drive > Select [1] Drive OP data Write > Select [2] Mode: 1 or 2 Press ENTER. {Mode: 1 BDP-BX37/S270/S370/S373/S470} {Mode:2 BDP-BX57/S570}
* After Finishing ReWrite OP data  > Turn AC Power OFF And confirm dIOP by select [7] OP Check Menu to verify IOP in specification.
* IOP in specification > Turn AC Power OFF.
* Turn Power ON and check playback performance using BD,DVD & CD.
In case of BU assy replacement:
  • OP related data for new assy is controlled by BU factory
  • All of data is recorded into a barcode label
  • The label is put on the assy
  • Service parts will be followed
  • In service, the data should be read out from problem assy
  • The read data should be saved to new assy.
Fact finding:

  • The label is “DATA MATRIX” format
  • The number of data is 91 words
  • The method of reading and saving is required when BU and main board are replaced.
  • All of BU data on the barcode label is shot by digital camera in order to make a JPEG file of BU data.
  • Application software in the PC makes digital data from JPEG file.
  • The converted data is stored to USB memory.
  • The USB memory is connected to BDP 5G unit.
  • In service mode, there is a command to save the data from USB memory to board memory.
The application software will be a service jig with J parts number as service jig, and the recording media will be CD-R.
