These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

SERVICE MODE
  • While pressing the green button on the remote control press the P on the cabinet front.  The service menu appears.
  • Use the P or P to highlight the service menu you require and press the F/OK button to enter.
  • To ‘Exit’ Press the Menu button to navigate backwards through the service menus until menus disappear.
Do not attempt to adjust service adjustments not listed on the above otherwise it may cause loss of performance and product safety.
SERVICE MENU
OPTION SETTINGS
The memory IC, IC803, stores the option data of TV set and service adjustments data for each circuit, therefore, when the memory IC is replaced, it should be performed  following setting and “SERVICE ADJUSTMENT”
To enter to the Option Mode
  • Press and hold the F/OK button on the remote control and Pbutton on the front panel of the TV. The option window will appear on the screen.

To set the option mode
  • Highlight the desired option item by using  the P or  P button .
  • To switch the option mode, use the Volume - (LEFT) or  Volume + (RIGHT)button.
  • The data which is set in the option mode is stored into the memory IC automatically.
                      Following table shows the available option items and default setting mode.
  • To Exit from the Service Mode Press the MENU button.
SERVICE ADJUSTMENTS
Some items of the service adjustments for this chassis are controlled by the CPU, IC801, and the adjustments are carried out by using the RC handset.
INITIALIZATION OF MEMORY IC
  • To initialize the memory IC (IC803), press and hold the NORMAL button on the remote control, then press the P button on the front panel of the TV set and then turn the Mains switch Off and On. The initialization is now completed.
  • When initialized the memory IC and all of the setting data (option data and service adjustment data) stored in the IC are reset to the default value. It is necessary to set the option settings and readjust the service adjustments.
The available adjustment items are as follows;
TDA9885 : This can be adjusted for AGC.
Video : This can be adjusted for the service adjustment.
DO NOT ADJUST OTHER SETTINGS
After replacing the Memory IC (IC803)
The memory IC, IC803, stores the service adjustments data for each circuit, therefore, when the memory IC is replaced, using “OPTION SETTING” on previous page and the following adjustments should program it.
Service menu: Video
  • Enter the service adjustment menu as described on the previous page and select “Video” using the Por P buttons and then press the F/OK button to enter.
  • Use the P or P buttons to select the option, and then press the F/OK button on the remote control to enter.
Service menu: Sound
  • Enter the service adjustment menu as described on the previous page and select “Sound” using the P or P buttons and then press the F/OK button to enter.
  • Use the P or P buttons to select the option, and then press the F/OK button on the remote control to enter.
Service menu: TDA9885
  • Enter the service adjustment menu as described on the previous page and select “TDA9885” using the P or P buttons and then press the F/OK button to enter.
  • Use the P or P buttons to select the option, then press the F/OK button on the remote control to enter.

Do not attempt to adjust the following service adjustments except when adjustments are required in servicing otherwise it may cause loss of performance and product safety.
AGC ADJUSTMENT
  • Select the clearest VHF station
  • Connect a digital voltmeter to test point TP-A and GND  
  • Enter service menu : TDA9885
  • With the P or P buttons select “Write 1”
  • Adjust using the Vol or Vol   buttons until the readout from the voltmeter is 3.2 VDC.
GREY SCALE ADJUSTMENT [SCREEN ADJUSTMENT]
  • Make sure the set is warm (20 mins)
  • Receive Black and White picture/pattern
  • Enter service menu “Video”
  • Select item “White Point R” or “White Point B”
  • Using the Vol +  or Vol - buttons adjust to make the white, white.
HORIZONTAL ADJUSTMENT [HORIZONTAL CENTRING ADJUSTMENT]
  • Set wide screen mode to “FULL”.
  • Preferably receive a circular pattern
  • Enter service menu “LCD Parameters”
  • Use the P or P buttons to highlight “H Display start”.
  • Press the Vol   or Vol   buttons to adjust horizontal centre.
VERTICAL ADJUSTMENT [VERTICAL CENTRING ADJUSTMENT]
  • Set wide screen mode to “FULL”.
  • Preferably receive a circular pattern
  • Enter service menu “LCD Parameters”
  • Use the P or P buttons to highlight “V Display start”
  • Press the Vol or Vol   buttons to adjust the vertical centre.
