These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

SELF DIAGNOSTIC FUNCTION
The units in this manual contain a self-diagnostic function. If an error occurs, the TIMER/PIC OFF LED indicator will automatically begin to fl ash. The number of times the LED fl ashes translates to a probable source of the problem. A defi nition of the TIMER/PIC OFF LED fl ash indicators is listed in the instruction manual for the user’s knowledge and reference. If an error symptom cannot be reproduced, the Remote Commander can be used to review the failure occurrence data stored in memory to reveal past problems and how often these problems occur.
DIAGNOSTIC TEST INDICATORS
When an error occurs, the TIMER/PIC OFF LED indicator will fl ash a set number of times to indicate the possible cause of the problem. If there is more than one error, the indicator will identify the first of the problem areas.
DESCRIPTION OF LED INDICATORS

Light is green when the TV set is on

Light is red when the TV set is in PC standby mode.
TIMER/PIC OFF LED
Amber/Green/Red
* Light is amber when the timer is set.
* Light is green when the Backlight feature is activated.
* Blinks red when indicating the TV may need servicing

VIEWING DIAGNOSTIC LIST
  • TV must be in standby mode. (Power off).
  • Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a second of each other: [DISPLAY =>Channel 5 =>Volume + => TV POWER.]
  • The Self Check list displays.
  • Results for all of the following diagnostic items are displayed at the bottom of the screen. No error has occurred if the screen displays a “0”.
Clearing the Diagnostic List
  • Using the remote commander, select Factory Default button.
  • To reset the Diagnostic List, select Yes.
  • To start Auto Program, select Yes. NOTE: Allow 30+ minutes for Auto Program to complete.
  • Using the customer’s information, reset their adjustments.
CAUTION: To remove the error indicator number you have to reset the settings back to the Factory Defaults. This action over-writes all customer settings. Before performing this reset, contact the customer to determine what adjustments they have made.
RESETTING THE TV TO FACTORY DEFAULTS
  • Traditional Service Mode is not available in this chassis. The only option for service technicians is to reset all of the settings to the Factory Default from the Self Diagnostic screen.  Resetting the TV to the Factory Defaults will over-write all customer settings. Before performing this reset, contact the customer to determine what adjustments they have made.
  • TV must be in standby mode. (Power off).
  • Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a second of each other: [DISPLAY => Channel 5 => Volume + => TV POWER.]
  • Results for all of the following diagnostic items are displayed at the bottom of the screen. No error has occurred if the screen displays a “0”.
