Xbox 360 Kinect – Disassembling procedure

There's a rubber pad between us and the insides of the Kinect. Let's take care of that...
The motorized base can rotate the top sensor bar to track you as you dance around the room. That sounds useful, but we're wary of mechanical parts that are prone to failure.
The plastic base is secured with a quartet of T6 Torx screws.
After removing the plastic base, there are another four Phillips #0 screws to remove.
Notice that Microsoft's already up to revision H. If this is launch day, what happened to revisions A through G?
The Kinect's motor and gears don't appear too robust.
About the size of an American quarter, the base has a tiny motor with three fragile plastic gears.
Barring overheating issues with the top unit, we're guessing this motor assembly will be the Kinect's weak point.
Do not physically force the Kinect into a specific position - allow it to automatically calibrate its aim.
With a metal spudger and some pretty serious prying, we were able to remove the bottom grille. This is not easy, as Microsoft applied adhesive quite liberally.
The Microsoft team built the Kinect around PrimeSense's Reference Design.
Microsoft hasn't acquired Primesense yet. This indicates to us that as impressive as the hardware is, Microsoft's software is doing the heavy lifting, turning the sensor bar's array of data into a 3D mesh of your spatial position.
Microsoft used T10 Torx security screws. That's not very nice. We're up to three types of screws already, and we haven't even got this open yet.
The innocent looking Xbox 360 sticker acts as cover for the third screw on each side of the Kinect.
Success! Now the fun really begins! Most of the Xbox's processing power is dedicated to gaming, so Kinect preprocesses the image prior to sending it on to the Xbox. Kinect condenses all the information it collects about your living room into two things: a color image and a depth map.
Kinect's slim form factor has forced Microsoft to split up the main board, stacking three boards vertically like a small apartment building.
There's a fan at the far end of the Kinect. It's aligned to suck air in one side of the Kinect and push it out the other.

This picture is of the device upside down, so these labels are swapped from what you would see looking at the Kinect.
These are not tiny, cell-phone cameras— they're closer to the camera you might find in a webcam, with large lenses and autofocus.
We can't independently confirm the resolution of the cameras yet, but Microsoft claims that the infrared cam is 320x240 and the RGB cam is 640x480.
This is a Prime Sense diagram explaining how their reference platform works. The Kinect is the first (and only) implementation of this platform.
One camera (and one IR transmitter) provide input for the depth map (rumored to be just 320x240), while the third camera detects the human visual spectrum at 640x480 resolution.
We have heard claims that the system can measure distance within 1cm of accuracy at two meters. While that's great in concept, early reviews are showing that you don't get anywhere near that accuracy in the real world - yet.
All four microphones connect to the motherboard with a single cable connector.
After removing three connectors and seven T10 Torx screws, the top board can be separated from the other two boards.
After heating up the adhesive on the heat sink with a heat gun, a spudger may be used to pry it off the motherboard with little trouble.

This board features a TI TAS1020B USB audio controller front and center.
A Kionix MEMS KXSD9 accelerometer is probably used for inclination and tilt sensing, and possibly image stabilization. The Kinect also uses this to know if the sensor has been moved externally
The further inside Kinect we go, the more connected we feel to it.
Here we discovered three of the four microphones inside of the Kinect. There are a total of four downward facing microphones: three on the right side and one on the left side. Microsoft determined that the best orientation for optimal sound gathering would be downward facing.
In order to properly recognize voice commands, the Kinect must perform an audio calibration for the room that its in. However, if you alter the arrangement of the furniture in your room, you must re-calibrate.
This board is held in place by four standoffs. We used needle-nosed pliers, but a 5 mm nut driver would be the right tool for the job.
Our friends at Adafruit have posted a $2,000 bounty for the first team to write an open source driver for Kinect. The Wiimote has been tremendously useful for our hobby robotics projects, and the Kinect's advanced sensors could really jump-start robotics research.
Finally! We're able to remove the power/data cord from the shell of the Kinect. Microsoft is using a USB-like connector for the Kinect. The Kinect uses 12 watts, which is quite a bit more than 2.5 watts of power provided by a standard USB port.
In the midst of an array of complex sensors and transducers, we remove the status indicator LED.
After removing several more screws, the two cameras and the IR transmitter easily lift off the metal backing bar.
Another component is sandwiched between the IR Projector and the metal backing bar. This is likely a Peltier Device used for cooling the IR projector.
The two cameras and the IR Projector, side by side. By having the depth-of-field camera and the RGB camera a calculated distance apart, the Kinect is able to perform immediate, 3D incorporation of real objects into on-screen images.
Having no form of user input other than voice commands and gestures, the crux of the Kinect's input system is the sensor system, comprised of the microphones and cameras.

Depress the battery release button on the top of the controller.
Remove the battery holder from the controller.
The standard option for Xbox 360 Wireless Controllers Battery Packs is AA batteries. A rechargeable battery is also available, but both battery options are removed from the controller in the same way

Use a pair of tweezers to peel the bar-code sticker from the battery compartment.

Remove the seven 9.3 mm T8 Security Torx screws securing the rear case to the front case.

Insert a Spudger between the front and rear cases along the left edge of the controller.
Rotate the spudger toward the front of the controller, prying the two cases apart.

Insert a spudger between the front and rear cases, near the headphone jack.

Rotate the spudger toward the front of the controller to pry the two cases apart.

Grasp the controller by the battery compartment and the headphone jack.

Lift the battery compartment away from the headphone jack, separating the rear case from the front case and logic board.
The battery contact springs are held in place by slots in the battery housing in the rear case. Be sure to realign them properly during reassembly.

Use the flat end of a spudger to remove the vibration motor cable, moving it upward from its socket on the logic board.

Lift the vibration motor out of the front case.

Remove the vibration motor from the other side of the controller using the same method previously described.

The right motor has significantly more counterweight than the left motor.

Lifting from the headphone jack and power plug, remove the logic board from the front case.

Remove the rubber pad from the back of the D-pad.

Remove the two 7.0 mm silver

Phillips screws from the back of the D-pad.

The D-pad is secured to its backing by two diagonal clips, shown in red.

Use a pair of tweezers and squeeze the clips together to release the D-pad from its backing.

Lift the D-pad backing out of its compartment on the front case.

The D-pad remains below the front case.
The D-pad will fall once its backing is removed. Be sure to support it as you remove the backing.
The backing is slotted in its compartment to ensure that it will always be aligned properly.

Remove the battery pack cover.
Remove batteries.

It recommended to using a nylon spudger for this step. A metal spudger is shown.

Grip the controller firmly to remove the side handles, wedging a spudger into the seam between the front and handle plates.
Pry the side plate away from the front plate by moving the spudger back and forth. You will need to do this all the way around the side plate's seam.

There is a hidden screw located in the middle of the controller behind the label.

Use a screwdriver and punch a hole directly in the center of the label.
You may also lift the label if you do not want to puncture it.
Remove the five 10mm screws located on the back of the controller using the T8 Torx Screwdriver.

Remove the backplate.

Remove the faceplate.

You may let the rumble motors hang freely out of their sockets.

De-solder the soldered joints while holding the red and black wires down on the top motherboard.
De-solder the black and gray wires that are attached to the top motherboard.
Remove the rumble motors and set them aside.
Be careful while using the soldering iron not to damage other components or hurt yourself.
Unscrew the two 7mm T6 Hex screws located near the rumble motor sockets.

Firmly grip sides of motherboard near the middle.
Lift upwards while slightly wiggling the motherboard forward and backward.
Lifting the motherboard will require some force.

Remove the six 7mm Hex screws located on the bottom motherboard.

Remove the bumpers by prying them off of the pegs that secure them, using a spudger.

They are located on the front and back of the controller.
A standard nylon spudger is recommended for this step. Using a metal spudger near the motherboard as shown risks damaging your device.

 Lift the piece surrounding the Home button off of its pegs.

Pry it off of the other side, using a spudger on the pins.
A standard nylon spudger is recommended for this step. Using a metal spudger near the motherboard as shown risks damaging your device.
Removing this piece may require a lot of force.

 Remove the bottom motherboard.

Before connect the XBOX360, ensure that you’ve told your LCD TV that you’re going to use component signal input.

Press the Menu button on the remote control.

Using the cursor arrows on the remote control, move to “Connections” and press the OK button.

Using the cursor arrows on the remote control, move to INPUT SELECT and press the OK button.

Using the cursor arrows, move to EXT4.

Using the cursor arrows on the remote control, more to COMPONENT AND PRESS THE ok BUTTON.

Press the END button on the remote control.

CONNECTING THE XBOX             

Connect the HD AV cable to the XBOX360 and ensure the setting switch has been moved to HDTV.

Connect the HD AV cable to the 3 RCA to 15-pin D-Sub adapter cable using the corresponding colours.

Connect the 3 RCA to 15 pin D-Sub adapter cable to your LCD TV.

CONFIGURING THE XBOX-360

When you power ON the XBOX360, the unit will output 720P and display the following screen.

Using the cursor keys on the controller, move to SYSTEM.

Press the SELECT button on the controller.

Using the cursor keys, move to DISPLAY and then press the SELECT button, then move to HDTV setting, and press the SELECT.

Then move to the output of your choice, and press the SELECT button. [SHARP LCD TVs ONLY SUPPORT 480p & 1080i OUTPUT VIA COMPONENT.  1080p IS SUPPORTED VIA THE 2 X HDMI INPUTS [HDMI cable not available from Microsoft]

After selecting the output, the screen will blank for a few seconds and then display the following.

Follow the on-screen instructions using the cursor keys on the remote controller, and pressing the SELECT button.  The screen will blank again for a few seconds switching to 50Hz.

Follow the on-screen instructions, and press the SELECT button.

You’ve now configured your XBOX for use with the Sharp LCD TV.

UNLOCK PROCEDURE

X-BOX

To reset the X-Box code, go to the settings screen from the dashboard.

From there, go to PARENTAL CONTROL.

Instead of entering the code, press the following button combination: X, Y, LEFT TRIGGER, X.

You will then enter into the PARENTAL CONTROLS screen where you can set a new code, or disable the parental lock.

Sony LCD TV Sets

When prompted for the code, enter the master reset code: 4357. This code will reset the master code.

Toshiba TVs and Combos.

• Disconnect the AC power for at least one minute to reset the clock.
• Adjust the volume to the minimum using the Volume down button on the front of the unit.
• Press and hold the Volume down button on the front of the unit and the 0 button on the remote control at the same time, holding them down for at least 10 seconds.
• The user menu will appear with the V-Chip cursor blinking.
• Press the ENTER key on the remote control and the NEW PASSWORD menu will appear.
• Enter your new password.

Philips & Magnavox

Philips sets use a four digit code to control the v-chip.

• The override code for Philips sets is 0711.
• Although it may say "Incorrect code" the first time to trick you. If "Incorrect code" is displayed, simply enter 0711 again.

To use it hit the MENU key to get to the menus.

Go up or down until you reach AUTOLOCK or SMARTLOCK, depending on the model, and push the "right arrow" key on the remote.

Enter the override code, and enter it a second time if it says it is incorrect.

Once in the AUTOLOCK or SMARTLOCK menu, go to BLOCK, and push the "right arrow" key.

Go to BLOCKING OPTIONS and press the "right arrow" key.

Go to MASTER DISABLE and press the "right arrow" key so that it says "MASTER DISABLE ON". The V-Chip is now reset.

Panasonic.

Panasonic sets need to be reset to clear the V-Chip settings.

To do this, put it in standby mode, then press the POWER and ACTION buttons at the same time and then turn the power off.

The set should reset to the factory defaults, and reset the V-Chip.

Mitsubishi.

Mitsubishi sets use a four-digit code for a V-Chip locked program.

To view a locked TV, cancel the lock, or to enter the V-Chip lock menus. You can view the locked shows on the TV set by pressing the number 9 and QV buttons on the remote at the same time, whenever your code is requested.

This process temporarily unlocks the TV and asks you to enter a new code.

Dish network receivers.

• Some boxes can be reset by unplugging the box, and while holding down the power button, plug the unit back into the wall receptacle and then release the power button. Then, let the box do its thing.
•  Other Dish Network receivers you can reset by first pushing the MENU button, then push "6, 3, INFO, right arrow, left arrow button, TV/VIDEO", then unplug the receiver and plug back in.

USING WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER BUTTON
The Windows Media Center Start button lets you access a connected Windows Media Center– based PC through your Xbox 360 console. If you are set up to use Windows Media Center on your Xbox 360 console, pressing the button will start Windows Media Center. If you are not yet set up to use Windows Media Center on your console, pressing the button will start the Windows Media Center setup wizard. The Windows Media Center button will also turn on the console if it is off.
TV MODE
To use the Universal Media Remote with your TV, press the TV button before the other TV control buttons. When in TV mode, the buttons on the remote will not glow until pressed.

Removing the Faceplate Top and bottom covers
 cover Pull up the bottom side of the front faceplate, and completely detach the whole piece.

If you bought the special open tool, insert the pin into the whole on top of the XBOX where the hard drive is docked. See below if you do not have the tool.

Instead you may put your finger under the top cover to the side of the DVD drive and pull up until the first two clips come out. Just lift the first 1/3rd.

Next with the torx screwdriver or special open tool pin, poke the whole in the exact place as illustrated to unclip the next clip. One on each side. The exact location is in-between and belowtwo solid holes of white plastic seen above.

The last clip on the side pictured of the top cover is accessible by removing the rubber support. However, I prefer stick my hand under and pull up so I do not have to remove it. Careful not to break the clips when you reach in and push the plate up. (If you remove the rubber pad, you can super-glue it back on.)

Now we have to turn the console over and take off the flat grey cover on the other side. Poke the 3 places as shown. Here is the 1st hole. There is another in the middle.

Here is the 3rd hole on this side. Next do the 3 clips on the other side the same way. Remove the piece, and set it aside.

Removing the White Outer shell  (Continue to next page of you do not have the special tool.) Otherwise, turn to the back of the console, and put the 2 pegs on the side with the pin into the two holes above where the power cord plugs-in. (See below.)

Turn or push apart the case to loosen that side.

On the other side, put the corresponding pegs into the holes above the AV/HDMI TV port.

Turn or push to separate the console pieces

Now for all users: Turn the console flat (horizontal), but also upside down as pictured. Notice the 4 clips on the front… Disconnect these with your finger, and pull up on the side of the case as pictured while you unclip the other side. Note that you will be voiding the warranty at this point by opening the console.

Here is the other side. Undo all the clips and pull the top of the case up (Technically the

bottom-side since the console is upside down.) It should be lose and you can lift up the cover now.

Here is a picture of the removal of the first half. If you have used the open tool you’re done.

If still attached, hold the steel case XBOX down, and push the case cover backwards.

Here is a side view. Careful! It will pop out.

Now the top cover is off. Set aside
