These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

AKAI - PDP 5006H PLASMA DISPLAY WITHOUT TUNER [SOFTWARE UPGRADE & CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION]



SOFTWARE UPGRADE PROCESS

  • Power switch OFF.
  • Connect the serial port of the control device to the RS-232 jack on the PDP back panel.
  • Power switch ON.  The power indicator on the front of the panel should now display 'Red' means that the PDP is in standby mode.
  • Copy the software [Flash Upgrader] to the computer.
  • Open the software [Flash Upgrader.exe]
  • Point "Flash" on the interface of the 'Flash Upgrader.exe'.
  • Press standby button on the front panel, or 'Power' button on the remote control.  Power indicator 'Green', the PDP is in power ON mode, software start upgrader immediately. 
  • Waiting for Upgrader Programming, when it is finished, the PDP will auto power ON.
  • After Upgrader is finished, shut down the Power switch, take out the RS 232C connection after the power indicator extinguished.  
  • THE COMPUTER AND PDP MUST BE KEEP 'POWER ON' IN THE SOFTWARE UPGRADE PROCESSING. 
CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

Module: 
There are 1 pc panel and 12pc.s PCB including  2 pc.s Y/Z sustain board, 2 pc.s of 'Y' drive board, 6 pc.s of X Extension boards, 1 pc control and 1pc power board.

SET:
There are 6 pc.s PCBs including  1 pc AUX.PSU board, 1pc keypad board, 1pc remote control receiver baord, 1pc L/R Speakers and 1pc main video board in the set.

PCB FUNCTION
  1. Power:  Input voltage AC 110V to 240V, 47Hz to 63Hz.  Input range AC 90V min and 265V Max; auto regulation.  To provide power for PCB.
  2. Main video interface board:  To process S-Video signals, AV signals, Y Pb/CbPr/Cr signals, DVI signals and D-SUB signals to digital ones  and to transmit to control board.
  3. Control Board:  Dealing with the digital signal [LVDS] for output to panel.
  4. Y-Sustainer / Z-Sustainer board:  Receiving the signals from control and high-voltage supply. Output scanning waveform for module.
  5. Y Drive board:  Receive signal from Y sustainer, output horizontal scanning  waveform to the panel.
  6. X-Extension boards 6 numbers:  Output addressing signals.
  7. Audio Board:  Process and amplifying the audio signals to speakers.
PCB FAILURES
  1. Control:  Abnormal Noise on the screen, No picture.
  2. Main [Video]:  Lacking color, Bad color scale, No picture but signals output, ODS and back light, abnormal noise on the screen.
  3. Power:  No picture, No power output.  
  4. Z-Sustainer:  No picture, Color not enough, Flash on the screen.
  5. Y-Sustainer:  Darker Picture with signals.
  6. X-Extension:  Abnormal Vertical noise on screen.
  7. Audio board or AUX PSU:  No voice, Noise
