These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

Service Default Mode [SDM], and Service Alignment Mode [SAM], offer several feature to service technician, and Customer service Mode [CAM], is used for communication between dealer and customer.

There are also options of using ComPair, a hardware interface between a computer and TV chasis.  It offeres the ability of structured troubleshooting error code reading, and software version readout for all [L01] chasis. Minimum requirements are a 486 processor, windows 3.1 and a CD-ROM drive.

HOW TO ENTER [SDM]
  • Use a standard customer remote control, and key in this code [062596] directly followed by "Menu" button or;
  • Short wires (9631) & (9641) on the mono carrier, and apply AC power.  Press the "Power" button, and remove the short after start-up.
  • NB: Entering [SDM] by shorten wires will override the +8V protection.  Do this only for a short period.  When doing this, the technician must know exatctely what he is doing, as it could lead to damaging the set.
  • Or via ComPair.
After enter the [SDM], a screen will be visible with "SDM' at the upper right side of it.

  • When you press the "Menu" button on the remote control the set will switch between the SDM and the normal user menu, with SDM mode is still active in background.  To return from SDM screen, use OSD / STATUS button.
  • When you press OSD / STAUS button on the remote control, the menu will show or hide the error buffer.  This feature is available to prevent interference during waveform measurements. 
  • On the TV, press and Hold Volume Down and Channel Down buttons for a few seconds, to switch from SDM  to SAM and reverse.
  • To exit from service mode, Switch the set to Standby using Power button on the remote control.  [[If you switch OFF the set by removing the AC power, the set will return in SDM when AC power is applied again.]] The error buffer is cleared
DISPLAY ITEMS WITH SDM MODE

  1. LLLL => It counts the normal operation hours, not standby hours.
  2. AAABCD-X.Y => This is the software identification of the main microcontroller.
  • A = Project name.
  • B = The Region [E=Europe, A= Asia Pacific, U=NAFTA, L=LATAM]
  • C = Software diversity [C=NTSC, D=DVD, N=NO TXT, T=TXT]
  • D = Language cluster number.
  • X = Main software version number.
  • Y = Sub software version number.
3 =>  SAM indication of the actual mode.
4 =>  Error Buffer.  Five errors possible.
5 => Option Bytes.  Seven codes possible.
6 => Clear erase the contents of the error buffer. Select the "Clear" menu item, and press the "Curser Right" key.The content of the error buffer will be cleared.
7 =>  Options.  To select the option bytes.
8 => AKB Disable [0], Enable [1] The black current loop.  (AKB = Auto Kine Bias).
9 =>  Tuner.  To align the tuner.
10 =>  White tone.  To align the white tone.
11 => Geometry.  To align the vertical geometry.
12 =>  Audio.  To align the audio.

TO NAVIGATE

  • In SAM, select menu items with the "Cursor UP/DN" button.  The selected item will be highlighted.  When not all menu items fit on the screen, move the "Cursor UP/DN" key to display to the Next/Previous items.
  • With "Cursor L/R"  keys, it is possible to (de)activate the selected menu item.  Activate the selected Sub-menu.
  • If Menu button is pressed twice the set will switch to normal user menus; with SAM mode still active at the background.  To return to SAM menu, press OSD / STATUS button [i+]
  • If Menu key is pressed in a sub-menu, the set will return to previous menu.
