These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

HOW TO ENTER SERVICE MODE TO PHILIPS - 19MDTR 20 -17 and 27DVCR 55



TO ENTER SERVICE MODE

  1. Turn the Power ON, by its front panel Power Switch.
  2. Enter TV mode, and press "Ch Up" or "Ch Dn" button on TV unit, and press "Disc Menu" button on the remote control.  Version of the microcomputer will be displayed.
DC [114V] ADJUSTMENT.
  • Connect the unit to AC power outlet.
  • Connect DC volt meter to  J553(+B), and heat sink on HV CBA or to Ground.
  • Adjust (VR2601) so that, the voltage of J553, becomes 114V+/-0.5V.
HOW TO MAKE A SERVICE REMOTE CONTROL UNIT
  • Prepare remote control unit [ID No.NE206UD; part number [4835 218 37345].  remove four screws from the back side.
  • Cut Off pin number (10) of the remote control processor, and short circuit pins [10 & 17] of the microprocessor with a jumper wire.
VERTICAL SHIFT ADJUSTMENT.
  1. Enter the service mode.  Press (9) button on the service remote control unit and select [V-P] mode.  
  2. Input a monoscope pattern.
  3. Press Ch Up or Ch Dn buttons on the service remote control so that, the top and bottom of the monoscope pattern are equal to each other.
HORIZONTAL SHIFT ADJUSTMENT
  • Enter the service mode.
  • Press "8" button on the service remote cotnrol, and select the ]H-P] mode.
  • Input a monoscope pattern.
  • Press Ch Up or Ch Dn buttons on the remote control so that the left and right side of the monoscope pattern are equal to each other.
  • Turn the Power OFF and ON again.
HEAD SWITCHING POINT ADJUSTMENT
  • If this adjustment have misaligned, cause head switching noise or vertical jitter in the picture. 

  1. Play back Test Tape [VFMS 0001H6]
  2. Enter service mode; and press "5" button on the service remote control.
  3. The head switching position will displayed on the screen.  If adjustment is necessary: press CH UP or Ch DN buttons on the remote control.  The value will be changed in 0.5H steps Up or Dn.  Adjustable range is up to [9.5H].  If the value is beyond the adjustable range, the display will change as [Lower output of range: 0.0H, Upper out of range: -.-H]
  4. Turn power OFF again
