These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

HOW TO ENTER THE SERVICE MODE TO SONY KV-XF29M35 _ KV-XF29M63 _ KV-XF29M93 _ KV-XF25M21 _ KV-XF25M63 _ KV-XF25M93

To enter the service mode to these models, press these remote buttons in sequence, in standby mode.

Switch the set to standby mode.
Press [DISPLAY_5_VOL+_POWER.
The service menu will be displayed.
  In this display, "GEO" is device name, "00" is item number, "HPS" is item name, "IC" is item data, "square" marking is, marking of virgin NVM, "SERVICE" shows service code, "50" shows PAL, SECAM (60 for NTSC), "601S" is OEM code, "1.0C" is software version, "000A" is the total Power On time in Hours.
Cancellation of service mode.
Set the TV in standby condition. (Press power button on the remote). Press Power button again, and the tV comes out of service mode.
Memory Write Confirmation.
* After doing all the desired adjustments, pull out the AC cord from power outlet, and plug it back again..
** Turn the Power switch ON, and set the TV to service mode, as described above.
*** Call the adjsuted item/s, and confirm adjustmets wer made.
Service mode adjustments.
* Put TV into service mode, as described above.
** Press[1] & [4] to select and item for adjustment.
*** Press [3] & [6] to lower or raise the data value of the selected item.
**** Press "Muting" button, and "WRITE" will be displayed on the screen.
***** Press [0] button to write the new data value to memory.
Service mode keys
* [1]&[4] - Select adjustment mode.
** [3]&[6] _ raise or lower the data value for selected item.
*** [Muting] - Write
**** [0] - Execute the writing.
***** [7]&[0] - All data becomes value in memory.
****** [8]&[0] - All user control goes to standard state.
******* [5]&[0] - Service data initilization.  Used after replacement of memory IC.
******** [2]&[0] - Write 50Hz adjustment ot 60Hz and vice versa.

Service mode adjustment method. [an example to adjust Hotizontal position of the picture].
Item number is "00" of device GEO.
* Select "GEO 00 HPS" with [1]&[4] buttons.
** Raise or lower the data vlaue with [3]&[6] buttons.
*** Select the optimum state.  Default value for PAL is "1F"
**** Write the adjusted data by pressing the 'Mute" button. The display will change to "WRITE".
***** Execute the the writing by '0' button.  The display will cange to red color, and back to 'SERVICE" again.
during the write operation, all items' data will be written together.
Adjustment after replacement of memory ICIt is very important to select this ic.  The original number should be used.  It is crucial.
IC numbers used in different models of this set are.
KV-XF29M35 - CXP86461-608S
KV-XF25M21 - CXP86461-608S
KV-XF29M63 & KV-XF29M93 - CXP86461-602S
KV-XF25M63 & KV-XF25M93 - CXP86461-609S
Adjustment after memory IC replacement.
* Enter service mode.
** Press [5]&[0] to initilize the data, and press [2]&[0]to copy the data into memory.
*** Call each item number and check all are OK.  If not adjust as necessary, and press [Muting] and [0] buttons to write it into memory.
**** Select item numbers "OPB0" "OPB1" "OPB2" , and respectivley set the bit per model with [3]&[6] buttons.
***** Press [8]&[0] buttons, (Test Normal), to return to the data to factory reset.  this will cancell the service mode too.
