These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

APPLICABLE TO PANASONIC: TH-42PX75U_TH-50PX75U_TH-42PX77U_TH-50PX77U PLASMA.
This fault is somewhat complicated to detect. Start with a quick troubleshoot.
  • Trouble Mode : 5V SOS.
  • Defective boards to suspect : D, P, C, SC, SS Boards or Panel.  Make confirm that the panel has no fault.  To check it:
  1. Disconnect CN P12, of Power Supply board.  Measure the resistance of Pin-1 of the lead cable to Ground.  Is there a short to ground?  Defective Panel.
  2. No short to ground?  Proceed more checks as follows.
  • Disconnect CN SC20 on SC board.  Turn ON the unit.  Does the Power LED stays ON? If yes; fault is with SC board.
  • If NO; Connect CN SC20 back, and disconnect CN SS23 on the SS board. Turn the unit ON.    Does the Power LED stays ON?  If yes; SS board is faulty.  
  • If NO; reconnect SS23 back into, and disconnect CN D31 & D32 on the 'D' board.  Check if pin 5 of CN P25 shorted to ground?  If yes, disconnect CN P25 of the socket.  Is pin 5 of the socket P25 shorted to ground?  If yes; 'P' board is faulty.  If No; 'D' Board is faulty.
  • If No connect D31 and leave D32 disconnected.  Is pin 5 of CN P25 shorted to Ground?  If yes; Disconnect CB1-CB4.  Is pin 5 of CN P25 shorted to Ground? If yes; faulty C1 board.  If no, Panel is defective.
  • Disconnect D31.  Connect D32.  Is pin 5 CN P25 shorted to Ground?  If No; 'P' board is defective.  
  • If yes; Disconnect CB5-CB8.  Is pin 5 of CN P25 shorted to Ground? If yes; C2 board is defective.
  • If No; Panel is defective.
