These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE
  • Use its remote control and enter the code [0=>6=>2=>5=>9=>6], directly followed by the OSD button[+].
  • The service mode window appears.
  1. After the SAM, a screen with 'SAM' appears on the upper right of the screen.
  2. Hours of Operation:  display shows the comulative total of operating hours, except standby hours.
  3. Version Information:  display shows the data from software and software version of ROM.  For example: [TL21US_1.0_01234_ = AAAABB_X.Y_NNNNN] denotes:  [AAAA] is the name of chassis, BB=Region, XY=the version of software, where X is the version number main, and Y is the version number of the sub. NNNNN= the last 5 digits of the 12NC software code.  
  4. FBX Version: display shows the software version of the FBX.
  5. Version of the Software EPLD: display shows the version of EPLD software.
  6. ERROR; The mistake most recently shown in upper left.
  7. Module Defective:  Here the module that generate the error is shown.  If multiple errors in buffer, that are not completely generated by a single module, there probably other defect.  Then display shows 'Unknown".
  8. Reset Buffer Error:  When "OK" is pressed, the error buffer will reset.
  9. Adjustments:  This will activate sub-menu settings
  10. Option of dealers:  Extra function of dealers.
  11. Service Options:  Extra function of Service.
  12. Initializing NVM:  When an NVM war corrupt, in the preceding frame the microprocessor exchange content with default data.  Meanwhile all pre-adjustment and setting values are recent and the numbers option are not correct.  Thus this is a way dangerous.  In this frame, the other procedure is used.  The processor recognizes a corrupted NVM flashes.  Now the user can do two things.  Save the contents of the NVM by ComPair for analysis of the development, but before boot.  This will give the service department ; Philips is a possibility for extra diagnostic; {OR} Boot the NVM.
  13. Store:  All options and settings are stores of telca, when press OK.  
  14. Functional Test:  All devices are tested by pressing OK.Can go to the 'Menu' normal user.  The SAM is still enabled ago.  Press 'Menu' can return to user menu SAM menu.  This can be useful to quickly change some function of the user manu.
  15. Upgrade:  Software upgrades.
  16. Events:  Not used.
  17. Info BDM.  Broadcast info Debug Menu:  The purpose of this Menu is to eliminate transmission errors, not the TV.  The menu gives an overview of what has been reviewed at the current time.  
     NB:  Never enter into service menu options, and change the data values stored there, without proper knowledge in electronics.  When changing a data value, the technician should be aware of what he is going to do, and what will be its effects after execution.  Improper setting to data values to service menu options, might make the set inoperative or will change to non-responsive to any of the external commands, either by remote control or by the front panel buttons.  Even, the company might not be able to correct it
