These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

How to enter service mode - sony KDL 40S2000
TO ENTER SERVICE MODE;  REMOTE CONTROL - RM-YD005
  1. Turn ON the TV and view a Digital Channel.
  2. Put the TV into Standby Mode.
  3. Press {Display => Channel-5 => Volume(+) => Power On} buttons on the remote control in sequence within a second.
  4. The digital service menu displays.
  5. Use [Dn] button to view the next category listing and the white balance adjustment items.
  6. Use [Up] or [Dn] button to select an item to adjust.
  7. Use ( > ) button to increase the data value to selected item.
  8. Use ( < ) button to decrease the data value to selected item.
  9. To save the data value changes, press [Dn] button to select Colour Save, and then press (+) button.
  10. To cancel the data value changes, select Cancel, by pressing the [Up] button and then press (+) button.
PROCEED THE SAME AS ABOVE TO ADJUST ANALOGUE ITEMS TOO.

VIEWING THE DIGITAL MODULE BOX [Q-BOX] SERVICE ITEMS.
  • Follow the instructions given above to enter digital menu option window.
  • To display the Digital Module [Q-box] service adjustments menus, press [JUMP].
  • The QM category displays.
  • To change the category, press [2] or [5] buttons on the remote control.  NOTE:  Pressing [2] or [5] only changes the categories within the service menu displayed.  To return to Digital Service Menu, press the [JUMP] button.
  • To call an item to adjust, use [1] or [4] button.
  • To adjust the data value to selected item, use [3] or [6] button.
  • To go back to Last Saved Data value, press [0] then press "Enter" on the remote control to read the memory.
  • To write into memory, press [Muting] then [ENT] on the remote control.
  • To exit from service mode, switch OFF the set, by its front panel power switch, and unplug the set from AC mains wall socket.
FACTORY RESET

The TEST RESET option resets all the customer adjustable data back to factory defaults.
  • Enter into service Menu Option, as described above.
  • Use [Dn] button to view the next category listing and white balance adjustment items.
  • Continue pressing the [Dn] button until next category list displays.
  • Press (+) button to select [TEST RESET] options.
  • Press [Dn] button to select "OK".
  • Press (+) button to reset the TV.
WHITE BALANCE ADJUSTMENTS

White balance adjustment should be done after replace the 'BU' board.
  1. Through the Video-1 input, step Gray Scale with Setup.
  2. Press Menu on the remote control.
  3. The user menu displays.
  4. Press [Dn] button until 'Settings' is selected, then press the (+) button.
  5. From the 'Picture Menu', press the ( > ) button to display the picture mode options.
  6. Press the [Dn] button to select 'Custom' and press (+) button.
  7. From the picture menu, press the [Dn] button to select Colour temperature.
  8. Press ( > )  button to display Colour Temperature options.
  9. Press [Dn] button to selct 'Cool', and press (+) button.
  10. From the Picture Menu, press the [Dn] button to select "Advanced Setting'.
  11. Using 'Arrow" keys, set all registers in the 'Advanced Setting Menu" to (Off).
  12. Put the TV in standby mode (Power Off).
