These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

SERVICE MODES

The Customer Service Mode (CSM) is used for communication between the call center and the customer, while the Service Alignment Mode (SAM) offers several features for the service technician.  This chassis also offers the option of using ComPair, a hardware interface between a computer and the TV chassis. It offers the abilities of structured troubleshooting, error code reading, and software version read-out for all chassis.
Customer Service Mode (CSM)
Purpose:  The Customer Service Mode shows error codes and information on the TV's operation settings. The call center can instruct the customer (by telephone) to enter CSM in order to identify the status of the set. This helps the call center to diagnose problems and failures in the TV set before making a service call.
The CSM is a read-only mode; therefore, modifications are not possible in this mode.
How to Activate CSM
Key in the code “123654” via the standard RC transmitter.  Note: Activation of the CSM is only possible if there is no (user) menu on the screen.

How to Navigate
By means of the "CURSOR-DOWN/UP" knob (or the scroll wheel) on the RC-transmitter, can be navigated through the menus.
General
* ModelPhilips Model type number (12 characters maximum)
* Production serial numberDisplays the production serial number of the TV. Note that if an NVM is replaced or is initialized after corruption, this production code has to be re-written to NVM. ComPair will foresee a in possibility to do this.
* Software version
# Format: TPAA.AA V2.XX_Y_Z
# TPS2.2E is the chassis name
V2.02 is the version and revision
# Y is the vendor code (1 digit):
# Z is the panel revision code(1 digit):
* Codes Displays the latest 5 error codes (Layer 2) status.
# 000 = No problem
# 011 = I2C bus error
# 012 = tuner error
* SSB Displays the 12NC of the SSB (Small Signal Board).
* Display Displays the 12NC of the display (LCD Panel).
* PSU Displays the 12NC of PSU (Power Supply Unit).
* NVM version and revision
* PQ Version and revision
* HDCP key Valid or Invalid
* Signal quality/present TV shows the digital reception quality, ATV shows whether analogue reception is available
* Audio system Mono, Stereo or Dual language
* Video format Displays the received video system (Pal, Secam, NTSC)
* Standby uP SW version and revision
How to Exit CSM
Press "MENU" on the RC-transmitter.
Service Alignment Mode (SAM)
How to enter
To enter the factory mode, use the following method:
* Press the following key sequence on the remote control transmitter: "062596" directly followed by the "INFO" button.  After entering the factory mode, the following screen is visible on the top and right of the panel.

How to Navigate
With the up/down cursor keys can be used to navigate through the menu, while with the Left/Right cursor then values can be changed.
How to EXIT
Choose "EXIT", and press the "OK" button. Turn “Off” the TV via the side control key and then turn “On” the TV again.
Error Codes
The error code buffer contains all errors detected since the last time the buffer was erased. The buffer is written from left to right. When an error occurs that is not yet in the error code buffer, it is displayed at the left side and all other errors shift one position to the right.  
{Make sure that the volume is set to minimum during Disconnecting the speakers in the ON-state of the TV. Disconnecting the speakers during ON-state of the set can damage the audio amplifier}
