These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

SONY DVPs - TROUBLESHOOTING - FAULTS & REPAIR PROCEDURE


APPLICABLE TO - DVP-S300, DVP-S500D, DVP-C600D, DVP-S330, DVP-S530D, DVPS550D, DVP-S3000, DVP-S7000, DVP-S7700
DVP-S300, DVP-S500D, DVP-C600D
NO POWER ON, NO OPERATION
Symptom:(2110)
Operating the DVD player and Power on may work intermittently. This may be caused by a short circuit between the FPC terminals of the rotary encoder. This encoder is located on the front panel.
Solution: Replace the rotary encoder with a new one listed in the table below.
DVP-S3000, DVP-S7000
Subject: UNIT MAY NOT PLAY DUAL LAYER DVD.
Symptom:
(1312) The unit may not be able to play some dual layer DVD’s.
Solution: Verify following IC140 versions, using Diagnostics Test Mode Menu (Other Checks). If the DRVCon is not updated to latest version, replace IC140 as per the table below. Be sure to do the auto drive alignments after the IC140 is replaced. If the units are being repaired for the dual layer issue only, then service is done as in warranty status. Verify the repair by testing unit with a commercial Dual Layer DVD.
DVP-S300, DVP-S500D
Subject: CLICK NOISE MAY PRESENT WITH AUDIODIGITAL CONNECTION.
Symptom:
(2544) When playing a DVD disc,noise may present when pressing function buttons, for example NEXT/PREV.This noise may be heard when an Optical/Coaxial connection is made to the AC-3 Decoder. If the symptom appears then do the following.
Solution: Replace the SYSCON ROM IC803 and the A/V DECODER (IC203) new version. These IC are located on the MB-78 board.
DVP-S300, DVP-S500D
Subject: SYSCON ROM VERSION (2.3) AVAILABLE FOR LISTED SYMPTOMS.
Symptom:
(2351) The following symptoms may appear on the DVD player.
1. Loss A/V Synchronization. Sometimes with certain DVD like "STAR GATE", "OLIVER", A/V Sync loses lock. Picture may disappear intermittently.
2. Closed Caption Display appears with the same character when the unit is in SLOW FWD playback mode. The characters should be changing.
3. Current sound status appears in which front panel displays 2/R for about 1 second, after Power onor Power down, the dimmer setting is at OFF.
4. When DVD player is placed in STOP, and then Chapter search is done, The unit will play a (TITLE) that is not the correct (TITLE) as indicated on display.
5. If CD or Video CD is stopped during play, and PLAY is pressed again. The unit may not playback. (Note: CD and Video-CD show this problem if they have short-recorded time. (About 5minutes)
6. When using the DVD Pioneer Karaoke Library Disc (Region 1) no vocal sound comes from the speaker, even if Audio Changebutton is pressed to change the sound.
Solution: If these symptoms occur replace SYSCON ROM IC803on the MB-78 Board.
DVP-S330
Subject: UNIT MAY POWER OFF OR FREEZE, WHEN LANGUAGE (OSD) IS CHANGED
Symptom:
(111*) When unit is set-up (OSD) in language French, Spanish, etc., and Bit Rate History is displayed; the unit may power off. Bit rate history can be selected
in advanced menu. NOTE:This is not a problem if language is setup in English, Dutch, or Danish.
Solution: Replace SYSCON IC205 with improved version IC206. Version 1.95. The IC package type is different for IC206, so remove IC205 and use the PC mounts
for IC206. Check Sum of IC206 is FB00 , which can be checked in TEST MODE of SYSCON DIAGNOSIS.
