These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE


  1. Select 'Setup' icon, and select 'Cable' mode.
  2. Select 'Timer' icon and set sleep time to [30] minutes.
  3. Press 'Menu' button twice to exit menus.
  4. Tune to 'Channel-124'.
  5. Adjust Volume to Minimum [0].
  6. Press 'Vol Dn button on the Receiver.  Red 'CHK' appears in upper corner.  While 'CHK' is displayed on the top left corner of the screen, pressing the 'menu' and 'Volume Up' buttons  on the receiver simultaneously will toggle between the modes.  Red 'CHK' for service man, and Yellow 'CHK' for aging.  
  7. Press the 'Power' button on the remote control to select one of six service man adjustment modes.
  • B => Serviceman VCJ SUB DATA ADJUSTMENT.
  • C => Serviceman VCJ CUT-OFF ADJUSTMENT.
  • S => Serviceman Options (PIP and CLOCK) ADJUSTMENT.
  • M => Serviceman MTS ADJUSTMENT.
  • X => Serviceman COMB FILTER ADJUSTMENT.
  • CHK => Normal Operation of CHANNEL UP/DN and VOL UP/DN.
TO EXIT SERVICE MODE.

Press 'Menu' and the 'Power' buttons on the set simultaneously for at least [2] seconds. 
The receiver momentarily shuts Off, and comes back On tuned to channel [3] with a preset level of sound.  Any programmed channels, channels caption data and some other user defined settings will be erased.

The remote is capable of operating many brands of VCRs and cable boxes.  First program the remote to match the remote system of the VCR or Cable Box.  The remote control memory is limited.  Some models of VCR or Cable Boxes may not operate.  The remote control is not designed to control all features that are available in all models.
