These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

HOW TO ENTER TO SERVICE MODE AND MAKE ADJUSTMENTS TO TOSHIBA 26HL84 - LCD TV


TO ENTER SERVICE MODE
  • Press the "Mute" button once on the remote control, (1/2) mute will be displayed on the screen.
  • Press 'Mute' button again; 'Mute" is displayed on the screen.
  • While pressing "Mute" button on the [TV] set, press 'Mute' button on the remote control. "S" will be displayed on the screen, indicating that the set is now in Service Mode.
  • Press 'Menu" button on the remote control, adjustment item will be displayed on the screen.  Adjustment items may be changed by pressing 'Ch Up | Ch Dn' buttons on the remote control.
  • To "EXIT" from service mode, turn the Power OFF by the power switch on the TV set.
When press the 'Input' source selection button on the remote control during service mode, will generate the built-in test video signal for servicing.  
  • Built-in test video signal:  General broadcasting signal => Red Monochorme => Green Monochrome => Blue monochrome => White Signal => Black Cross Bar => Built-in signal Off.
For the video system adjustment, never attempt to initialize the data unless initial setting data is exceed incorrectly.  
  1. Brightness Correction: [BRTC] = Receive a general broadcasting program, then press the "Menu" button on the remote control, set the unicolour to minimum (00), and brightness to standard (00) in order to display the 'Setting Menu => "Picture Setting" => Picture adjustment" by pressing the cursor ( < ) ( < ) and [Up] [Dn] buttons.  
  2. Select BRTC using cursor buttons Ch Up / Ch Dn on the remote control, fine adjust black signal to be black using Vol Up / Vol Dn  buttons on the remote control.  After the adjustment, set 'Unicolor' back to initialize data. 
  3. White Balance => Enter the Service Mode, press 'Input' source setting button on the remote control to generate built-in white signal.  Adjust the data items RCUT, GCUT & BCUT for proper white balanced picture in lo-light area.   [For hi-light area, GDRV and RDRV should be adjusted for proper white-balanced picture.
SELF DIAGNOSIS FUNCTION
  1. Press [9] button on the remote control during display of adjustment menu in service mode
  2. During diagnosis, display will be

NO  12345678  => part number of microprocessor.

POWER:  000 => Operation number of protecting circuit   "00" is normal. When indication other than "00", over current is apt to flow, and circuit parts may possibly be damaged.

BUS LINE:  OK  => "OK' is normal.  When indication shows "NG"[Green: OK, Red: NG]; the bus line may possibly be short   -  circuit

BUS CONT; OK  => 'OK' is normal.  When indication shows "Q uuu(Green: OK, Red; NG); the device with number be possibly damages.  
BLOCK:                       MAIN SUB |  MAIN: Main picture display -- Green indication.  Main picture does not display -- Red indication.
SUB:  Sub picture display --- Green indication.  Sub picture does not display  --- red indication.

SET ID: 01  => ID number of the unit.

EEP VER:               02  => EEP of soft version information.

OPT 1: 05                     OPT 2: 70

SW VER: LCD/May               9              2003                              18:29:58

DVI                                         BEP  => DVI number information.  DVI ERR CODE:  DVI status code number.  BEP SW VER: Software version information for BEP processor.  BEP E2P VER:  Software version information for BEP E2P.

TIME: 05 => Total Hour of Turn the TV On.

  1. Enter the service mode, and select any register item.
  2. Press and Hold "Recall" button on the remote control, then press "Channel Up" button on the TV.  The initialization has been completed
