These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

                                      RESET AND INITIALIZATION TO

Many customer generated symptoms, intermittent symptoms or no symptom found can be resolve by using Initialization Options.  First perform a 'System reset" by pressing "Power" button on the front panel, and holding it for about 10 seconds.  If this does not resolve the issue, perform an AV reset, by pressing   [<Activity>[+] Vol Dn], buttons on the front panel at the same time, and hold them for 10 seconds. If necessary, perform a user level Initialization, by pressing <Menu> <1-2-3> <Enter> with remote control.

                                             RESET / INITIALIZATION GUIDE.

Remote control TV layer Reset =>
When to use:
Returns the remote control TV layer to normal operations.

How to use:
  1. Set the slide switch to TV position.
  2. Press and hold the <Power> button, until it flashes twice then release the button.
  3. Enter code [0-0-9-3-5]
Resulting action:  Once the valid code has been entered and confirmed, the remote control has been reset.

Remote control TV Volume/Mute functions =>  When to use:
 Returns the volume and mute functions of the volume control to TV volume and mute for TV, Cable, Sat and DVD layers after the audio lock for AV receiver feature has been used.

How to use:
  1. Set the slide switch to TV position.  
  2. Press and Hold Power button, until it flashes twice, then release the button.
  3. Enter code (9-9-3)& <+>
Resulting action:
The remote will now operate TVs volume and mute when the slide switch is in the TV,CABLE/SAT, VCR or DVD positions.

AV Memory Reset, by individual input => 
When to use:
 When the audio or video settings for a single input seems to be incorrect.

How to use: Press Menu=>Audio/Video=>AV Reset.
Resulting action:
All audio and video settings for the individual input are reset, except for the Listen to, Language, Balance and closed Caption settings.

A/V reset For All Inputs => 

When to use:
To reset audio and video adjustments for all inputs to the original factory settings.

How to use:
While viewing the TV, press its front panel buttons <Activity> + <Vol Dn> at the same time and hold them for 10 seconds.

Resulting action:
All audio and video settings are reset to the factory default settings.  No other Menu Options are changed.

System Reset =>

When to use:
To reset the TV when it does not Turn On or Off, does not respond to remote control, front panel buttons or has other unusual symptoms.

How to use:
Press the <Power> button on the front panel and Hold it for 10 seconds.

Resulting action:
TV Micro Reboots. The changes made during the current TV-ON period may be lost.  All other previous user setting are not lost.

Initialize User Level=>

When to use:
To reset all customer settings, except V-Chip.

How to use:
Press <Menu><1-2-3><Enter>

Resulting action:
All customer Menu options and AV settings except V-Chip are reset to factory default.

Initialize Service Level => 

When to use:
To Reset all customer settings.

How to use:
<Menu><2-4-7-0>.  Highlight ,INITIALIZE" and press <Enter>
Resulting action:
All customer menu options and AV settings are reset to factory defaults.

V-Chip password Bypass =>

When to use:
If V-Chip password is not known.

How to use:
Press [Return] + [9] at the same time.
Resuting action:
Password will be bypassed.  If in V-Chip menu, enter the new password.

Unlock Front Panel =>

When to use:
To unlock the Front Panel, if it has been locked in the V-Chip Menu.

How to use:
Press and Hold the front panel ,<ACTIVITY> button of about 10 seconds.
Resulting action:
Front panel becomes operational.  Other V-Chip settings not changed.  [cannot be performed while in the low power mode, and the set is OFF.
