These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

HOW TO ENTER [SAM] (SERVICE ALIGNMENT MODE]

To enter service alignment mode to these sets, Press the following key sequence using the remote control.
"0-6-2-5-9-6"-[i+].
Note:  Do not allow the display to time out between entries.
After entering service mode with this method, service warning will appear on the screen.  You can continue pressing any digit key on remote control.


  • Use the DST emulation feature of ComPair. 
  • Press the "Align" button on the DST, while the set is in the normal operation.  
SERVICE MODE SCREEN DESCRIPTIONS

When the set is in service mode, the service mode window will show, with SAM displaying on the top right corner of the screen.  
Contents of SAM.
  • Operation hours:  Displays the accumulated total of operation hours; not the standby hours.
  • Software Information.
SWID displays the SW version of the software. Example: HD5.22US1-1.00.
AP1 = 2 letter and 1 digit combination to indicate the software type and supported languages.  
AP = Asian Pacific
1 = Main SW language version number.
5.15 = Sub Version number.
  • Errors:  followed by maximal 7 errors.  The most recent error is displayed at the upper left.

-- Clear errors:
  • Erase the content of the error buffer.  Select the "Clear Errors" menu item, and press Left or Right Cursor key.  The content of the error buffer will be cleared.
HOW TO NAVIGATE

Menu items may be selected using the Cursor Up/Dn keys.  The selected item will be highlighted.   When all menu items will not fit on the screen, pressing the Cursor Up/Dn keys on the remote control will display the next or previous menu items. With Cursor Left/right keys, it is possible to:
  • Activate/Deactivate the selected Menu Item.  
  • Change the data value to the selected Menu Item.
  • Activate the selected sub menu.  
Access to normal user menu:   Pressing the Menu Button, switches between SAM and normal user menus; with SAM mode still active on background.  Pressing the Menu key in the sub-menu will return the screen to previous menu.

MENU & SUB-MENU DEFINITIONS

Clear Errors:  Erases the content of the error buffer. Select the "Clear Errors" menu item and press Left or Right Cursor key.  The contents of the error buffer will be cleared.

TO EXIT FROM SERVICE MENU

To Exit from service menu, Press the Power/Standby button.
To save the error codes, unplug the AC power cord without turning OFF the set.  When the Power is turned back ON, the service alignment mode will still be active.

CUSTOMER SERVICE MODE [CSM]
Purpose:
    When customer having problems with this set, he can call the dealer.  The service Tech; can then ask the customer to activate the CSM in order to identify the status of the set.  Now the service Tech; can judge the severity of the complaint. In many cases, he can advice the customer, how to solve the problem, or he can decide if it is necessary to visit the customer.   The CSM is a Read Only mode, therefore, modification in this mode are not possible.
There are two pages of CSM.  The second page is accessed by pressing the 'Ch Dn' button either on the remote control or by front panel buttons.  Press Ch Up button to view the previous page.  The second page shows the status of the ATSC module, like channel input, RF channel selected, channel information type and status.   All details are only readable, and not adjustable buy the customer.
    If you want to get in to CSM, Press the Mute button on the remote control along with Menu button on the front panel of the TV set, and Hold down both buttons for at least 5 seconds.
