These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

SERVICE DEFAULT MODE

Purpose:

  • To create a pre-defined setting, to get the same measurement result as given here
  • To override SW protections detected by standby processor and to make the TV start up to the step just before protection; a sort of automatic stew-wise start up.
  • To override SW protections detected by MIPS
  • To start the Blinking LED procedure

  • All picture settings at 50% [Brightness, Contrast, Color]
  • All sound settings at 50%, except volume at 25%
  • All service unfriendly modes; if present; are disabled, like sleep Timer - Child/Permanent Lock.
  • Picture mode mute. [Blue mute or Black mute]
  • Automatic volume levelling [AVL].
  • Skip / blank of non-favorite pre-sets.
TO ACTIVATE SDM [Service Default Mode]

  • Analogue SDM:  Use the standard remote control and key in code {0 =>  6 => 2 => 9 => 6}, directly followed by "Menu".  It is possible that, together with the SDM, the Main Menu will appear.  To switch it 'OFF', push the 'Menu' button again.
  • Digital SDM:  Use the standard remote control, key in {0 => 6 => 2 => 5 => 9 => 3}, directly followed by 'Menu' button.  It is possible that with the SDM, the Main Menu will appear.  To switch it OFF, push the 'Menu' button again.
  • Analogue SDM can also be activated by shorting for a moment the two solder pads on SSB, [see the figure given below], with the indication 'SDM'.  Activation can be performed in all modes, except when the set has a problem with the Stand-by processor.

  • After activating this mode, "SDM" will appear in the Upper Right corner of the screen.
TO NAVIGATE
  • When 'Menu' button is pressed, the set will toggle between the  SDM and normal user menu; with SDM mode still active in the background.
TO EXIT 'SDM'

Use one of the following methods
  1. Switch the Set to Standby, via remote control.
  2. Via standard customer remote control transmitter:  Key in "00" sequence
