These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

UPGRADE 'EDID' NVM

In case the SSB have been replaced, always check the display option code in SAM, even if there is picture.  With a wrong option code it is possible there will be a picture, but that in certain conditions will have unwanted side-effects.

EDID NVM Upgrade

To upgrade EDID NVM, short circuit [pin-7] of the EDID NVM to Ground.  Therefore, some test points [EDID1, EDID2 & EDID3] are foreseen next to the HDMI connectors.  See the figure.



The set software and security keys are stored in a NAND Flash, which is connected to the PNX85xx via the PCI bus.

It is possible for the user to upgrade the main software via the USB port  This allows replacement of a software image in a stand alone set, without the need of an E-JTAG debugger.  A description on how to upgrade can be found in the DFU.

PERFORM THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS AFTER 'SSB' REPLACEMENT


  1. Set the correct Option Codes. [See the sticker inside the TV]
  2. Upgrade TV software.
  3. Perform alignments.
  4. Check in CSM if HDMI keys are valid.

Automatic Software Upgrade

In normal conditions, so when there is no major problem with the TV, the main software and default software upgrade application can be upgraded with the 'AUTORUN.UPG' (FUS part of the one-zip file).  This can also be done by the customers themselves, but they will have to get the software from commercial Philips website or via the Software Upgrade Assistant in the user menu. The 'autorun.upg' file must be placed in the root of the USB stick.  

UPGRADE PROCEDURE
  1. Copy '"AUTORUN.UPG" to the root of the USB stick.
  2. Insert USB stick in the side I/O, while the set is ON.  The set will restart and upgrading will start automatically.  As soon as the programming has been finished, will get the message that the USB stick can remove and to restart the set. 
MANUAL SOFTWARE UPGRADE

  • Disconnect the TV from Mains AC Power.
  • Press the 'OK' button on a Philips DVD RC-6 remote control.  Keep the 'OK'  button pressed while reconnecting the TV to the Mains AC power.
