These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

MEMORY INITIALIZING [After Memory IC replacement Only]
  • Put a new memory IC.
  • Turn on the TV set.
  • Press and hold the TV/AV Selector on the TV set for more than 2 seconds.
  • “CLR” will be displayed on the screen.
  • Press the PROGRAMME UP on the TV set while the above On-Screen Display is still on the screen.
  • This completes the initialization of memory IC.


Following shows the initialized contents of memory data by this procedure

Plug & play :                     No executed
Inhibit data :                      Cancelled
Ch skip data :                   Cancelled
Sound volume data :          10/63 steps.
Volume Lock :                   OFF
Tuning Lock :                    OFF
Colour system :                AUTO

ENTERING SERVICE MODE

  • Press and hold the MENU button on the Remote Control and press the VOLUME (+) button on the TV set.

  • Select item by pressing the TIMER (Item No. UP) or SOUND MUTE (Item No. DOWN) button on the remote control handset.

{Timer:  01=>02=>03=>04=>05......90}   {Sound mute: .90=>89=>88=>87=>86......01}
  • Adjust data value by pressing the VOLUME + or VOLUME - button on the remote control handset.
  • To return to normal TV mode, press the MENU button on the TV set or the remote control handset.
SERVICE MODE ADJUSTMENTS

RF-AGC
  • Tune the receiver to most clearest (or strongest) VHF station in your area. Set the brightness and contrast controls to maximum. Set the colour control to minimum.
  • Select [RF AGC] in the service mode.
  •  Change value until the snow noise just disappears.
  • Exit from service mode.
HORIZONTAL CENTER
  • Receive a monochrome circular pattern.
  • Set the brightness and contrast to normal.
  • Select [H-PHA] in the service mode.
  • Change value to be optimum horizontal centre position.
  • Exit from service mode.
VERTICAL SIZE

  • Receive a monochrome circular pattern.
  • Set the brightness and contrast to maximum.
  • Select [V-SIZ] in the service mode.
  • Change value to be optimum vertical size.
  • Exit from service mode.
V-S CORRECTION
  • Receive a crosshatch pattern.
  • Set the lever of SW501 (Vertical Center SW) as the position of a center.
  • Select a picture mode of NATURAL by pressing the PICTURE MODE button.
  • Select [V-SCO] in the service mode.
  • Adjust Vertical S-letter Correction so that the difference of UPPER, CENTER & BOTTOM of the sides of the screen becomes less than 2 mm by pressing the VOLUME + or - button.
  • Confirm Vertical Linearity and adjust Vertical Center then Vertical Size.
  • Exit from service mode.
