These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TO ENTER SERVICE MODE

  • Turn 'ON' the receiver, and Disconnect 'AC' power supply. {Unplug the power cord from AC wall socket}
  • Press and Hold 'Volume (-) button on the TV control panel, and re-plug it to AC power.
  • Service Mode Menu will appear on the screen like this.

Here: 080 = Item Number:  ATT = Title:  07 = Hex Data & 000001111 - 8 bit binary data.

  • Press {Ch Up or Ch Dn} key to select the desired service menu item.
  • Press {Volume (+/-) to increase or decrease the data sequentiality.  The number keys (0 to 7) toggle only their respective bits, between (1) and (0), and are used to change the sub-address.  For example:  to change bit [5]:

When EEPROM IC is replaced, check the bus data to confirm they are same as below.  The standard Menu should be checked and be set up or re adjusted according to the procedures described.  Initial set up data {080;081;082;087 & 088} are fixed.

PROGRAM CODES

The microprocessor use in this model is a multi-purpose type, and used in several other models.  To ensure proper operation and the correct features for a particular model, the program codes must be correct.
The Option data 1 (No.087 OP1) should be hexadecimal 09 (00001001 binary)
Option Data 2 (No.088 OP2) should be hexadecimal 00 (00000000 binary
