These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

How to upgrade the firmware
For possible firmware upgrades, visit our support web site at: “http://sharp-world.com/products/netmd/index.htm”. You can download firmware files to your PC to upgrade this product.
Caution
When formatting the hard disc on this product, follow the above procedures. Do not use other tools such as a disc management tool, a formatting tool, etc. Functions of this product may be disabled.
1. Turn on the unit.
2. Connect the AC adaptor to the DC+5V socket and place the unit on
the cradle.
3. Connect the unit to a PC with a USB connection cable.
4. After Windows detects this unit as a portable hard disc, copy the
firmware file into this unit‘s ”FIRMWARE” folder.
5. Disconnect the unit from the cradle.  • The unit turns off automatically.
6. Turn on the power.
7. The unit turns off automatically. Turn it on to finish the upgrade.
Formatting the hard disc
The hard disc on this product is partitioned and formatted before shipment (normally you do not need to format it by yourself).  If you accidentally format the heard disc in other ways, partition and format it in the following way. Make sure to back up important data beforehand since all the data on the hard disc will be deleted.
Windows 98 Second Edition/Windows Millennium Edition 
1. Connect the unit to a PC with SHARP Music Manager installed.
2. Click the “My Computer” Icon.
3. Use mouse right slick on “SHARP” and then select “Format”.
4. Make sure the label name is “SHARP”.
5. Click “Start”.
6. When formatting is complete please disconnect the unit from the cradle. The unit turns off automatically.
7. Turn on the unit again, and the unit will automatically create the system folders which are required to be worked with SHARP Music Manager.
Windows 2000 Professional/ Windows XP Home Edition/Windows XP Professional
1. Connect the unit to a PC with SHARP Music Manager installed.
2. Click the “My Computer” icon.
3. Use mouse right click on “SHARP” and then select “Format”.
4. Select “FAT32” and make sure the label name is “SHARP”
5. Click “Start”.
6. When formatting is complete please disconnect the unit from the cradle. The unit turns off automatically.
7. Turn on the unit again, and the unit will automatically create the system folders which are required to be worked with SHARP Music Manager.

How to install the software
Exit all applications before starting the installation.
Insert the supplied CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive  The "Software Installer" screen appears.
Click the "Install SMM" button.  The "Welcome" screen appears.
Click the "Next" button.  The "Choose Destination Location" screen appears.
Click the "Next" button.  The "Set Program Shortcuts" screen appears.
Click the "Next" button.
Click the "Next" button.
When the installation is completed, the "Setup Complete" screen appears.
Click the "Finish" button.  Check the "Yes, Launch the program file." box. After installation, SHARP Music Manager starts.
[If the "Software Installer" screen does not appear in step 1, double click the "autorun.exe" stored on the CD-ROM from Explorer, etc.  When you use Windows 98 Second Edition, insert the supplied CD-ROM and click the "Install W98SE Driver" button to install the driver.]
How to connect the unit to a PC
Connect the unit to a PC to transfer audio data.
Turn on the unit
2 Connect the AC adapter to the DC IN 5V socket and place the unit on the cradle.
3 Connect the unit to a PC with a USB connection cable. Connect the unit to a PC with a USB connection cable.  The hard disk access indicator (green) flashes.  Whilst the unit is connected to the PC, the screen  appears.
[It is recommended to use the AC adapter when connecting the unit to a PC. Otherwise data on the unit may be corrupted when batteries run out.  Do not disconnect a USB connection cable or remove the unit from the cradle whilst transferring data from a PC. Data on the unit may be corrupted.  The operation buttons on the main unit do not work if it is connected to a PC. Disconnect the PC to operate on the unit.]
Disconnecting the unit Windows 98 Second Edition
1 Double click "Safely Remove hardware" on the taskbar.
2 Select "TOSHIBA MK2004GAL USB Device", and then click "Stop".
3 Select "TOSHIBA MK2004GAL USB Device", and then click "OK".
4 "The USB Mass Storage Device can now be safely removed from the system" appears. Click the "OK" button and disconnect the USB connection cable from the PC.
Windows Millennium Edition
1 Click "Remove Hardware" on the taskbar.
2 Click "USB Disk - Stop Drive".
3 "USB Disk can now be safely removed" appears.  Click the "OK" button and disconnect the USB connection cable from the PC.
Windows 2000 Professional
1 Click "Unplug or eject hardware" on the taskbar.
2 Click "USB Mass Storage Device - Stop Drive".
3 "USB Mass Storage Device can now be safely removed" appears. Click the "OK" button and disconnect the USB connection cable from the PC.
Windows XP Home Edition/Professional
1 Click "Safely Remove Hardware" on the taskbar.
2 Click "Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device - Drive(*:)".
3 "Safe To Remove Hardware" appears. Click the message and disconnect the USB connection cable from the PC.
SYMPTOM:  Unit fails to operate permanently or intermittently.
CAUSE: Ribbon cable to the HDD.
ACTION:  Replace the HDD ribbon cable using the part number below.  Ensure that the replacement procedure outline below is followed when replacing the ribbon cable.
FPC cable kit => 9JC20203010010
Name Plate Right => 9JCE7830113011
Name Plate Left => 9JCE7830114011
To remove the casing, it is necessary to carefully pries off the two metallic strips (items A1 in the picture below). This is best carried out by heating gently with hot air and sliding a sharp object such as a craft knife underneath to break the seal. It will then be possible to remove the four securing screws (items A2) to allow further dismantling of the cabinet.
[Note that the two metallic strips are very fragile and can break very easily. The part number for these items is shown above.]
