These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

ENTERING INTO SERVICE MODE AND MAKING ADJUSTMENTS.
Part-1
To enter into the service mode, you can use the remote control handset supplied with this set [RM-887].  Before making any adjustments, not all the preset adjustments first.  Then make a change any value.  This will help you to reset the values to its original, if you accidentally go out of range of these values
To enter into the service mode
[1] Turn ON the main power switch and enter into the stand-by mode.
[2] Press the following sequence of buttons on the Remote Commander.
ON SCREEN DISPLAY > DIGIT 5 > VOLUME + > TV
‘TT—‘ will appear in the right upper corner of the screen. Other status information will also be displayed.
[3] Press Menu on the remote commander to obtain the following menu on the screen.

[4] Move the corresponding adjustment using the button on the remote commander
[5] Press the (+) button to enter the selected adjustment.
[6] Turn OFF the power to quit the service mode, when adjustments have been completed.

SUB BRIGHTNESS ADJUSTMENT
[1]  Input a Philips Pattern.
[2]  Set the picture control to Minimum.
[3]  Enter into the ‘Picture Adjustment’ service menu.
[4]  Adjust the sub-brightness data so that there ie barely a difference between  the 0 IRE and 10 IRE signal levels. In short, a barely seen pattern or picture, at absolute darkness.
SUB CONTRAST ADJUSTMENT
[1] Input a video that contains a small 100% area on a black background.
[2]  Set the picture control to Maximum.
[3]  Connect an Oscilloscope to Pin number-3 of CN 301 [A board].
[4]  Enter into the ‘Picture adjustment’service menu.
[5]  Adjust the sub contrast data, to obtain a black to white amplitude of 2.20V.
