These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TROUBLESHOOTING SOFTWARE UPDATE AND POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT 

Preparation to upgrade software
1.Power on the set and press “settings” button on the remote.
2.Press left cursor to select "Information". Check the Software Version.
3. Check that the software version is correct in the UPG folder. For example:if the software version is displayed as “BDT20 XX.XX.XX”, the correct software is “BDT20_BD.bin”. Otherwise, the software is “BDT2_BD.bin”.
4.Start the CD Burning software and create a new CD project (Data Disc). Copy the UPG folder to the root directory of the data disc.
5.Burn the data onto a blank CDR
Procedure for software upgrade:
A) Upgrade software via CDR:
1.Power on the set and insert the prepared Upgrade CDR.
2.The set will start reading the disc .
3.When the BDT recognizes the disc, press Setting-->System-->System--> Upgrade-->Disc. Follow the instructions on the screen.
4.About 3 minutes later, the BDT will automatically turn off, when upgrade has been completed.
B) Upgrade software via USB Flash Drive:
1.Decompress the packed file, copy the UP G folder to the root directory of a USB memory device.
2.Insert the USB. The player will recognize the USB device automatically.
3.Press Setting-->System-->System Upgrade-->Disc. Follow the instructions on the screen.
4.About 3 minutes later, the BDT will automatically turn off, when upgrade has been completed.
Read out the software version to confirm upgrade.
1.Power on the BDT and press the “Settings” button on the remote.
2.Press left cursor on remote control to select "Information". The software version and other information will be displayed on the TV screen as follows:
Software Version: BDTX XX.XX.XX
Mac Address:XX-XX-XX-XX-XX-XX
Caution: The set must not be pow ered off during upgrading. Otherwise the Main board will be damaged entirely.
TROUBLESHOOTING
No display on VFD, and buttons do not work
Check every supply voltage on main board is normal >Refer to Power supply board part
Check the front bo ard signals SCLK,SDA, STB (Pin 10,11,12of the XP1) > Check if the U2 is o n the front board.
Check th e reset circuit for R60,C14,D1. > Correct connection
Replace VF D
Remote control does not work
Check whether the remote controller’s battery is exhausted or not. > Replace the battery for remote controller
Check the IR1 power supply is OK no the front board IR1 is about 5V > Check the VCC net no the front board
Replace IR1
Can’t read disc or can’t open the disk door
Check whether the DVD loader running is normal > Check the co nnection 4pin cable from the main board
Check 45pin and 8pin cable from main board connection to the l oader is normal > Fix the connection the 45pin cable or 8 pin cable
Replace the loader
Cannot connect to network
Check if U7 is oK In main board > Fix U2 in mainboard
Check R12 5 is on in main board > Fix all the resistor
Check if the P2 is ok Or not > Change P2
