These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TEST MODE

FACTORY PRESET MODE

* All pre-set contents are reset to the default setting.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [MOVIE] and the [MAIN MENU] buttons simultaneously, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

The message “MEMORY CLEARING” and “MEMORY CLEARED!” appears for a moment and the present contents are reset to the default values.

AM CHANNEL STEP 9 kHz/10 kHz SELECTION

MODE (Except Mexican model)

* Either the 9 kHz step or 10 kHz step can be selected for the AM channel step.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [PRESET TUNING +] button or the [TUNING +] button, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

Either the message “AM 9kHz Step” or “AM 10kHz Step” appears for a moment and select the desired step.

FLUORESCENT INDICATOR TUBE TEST MODE

* All fluorescent segments are tested.

When this test is activated, all segments light on at the same time, then each segment lights on one after another.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [SB DECODING] (DE895), the [SURR BACK DECODING] (DE995) and the [DISPLAY] buttons simultaneously, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

4. Press the [DIMMER] button, all segments and all LEDs light on.

5. Every pressing the [DIMMER] button turns on each segment and LED one after another in the same order.

SOUND FIELD CLEAR MODE

* The pre-set sound field is cleared when this mode is activated.

Use this mode before returning the product to clients upon completion of repair.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [2CH] button, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

The message “S.F. Initialize” appears for a moment.

SOFTWARE VERSION DISPLAY MODE

* The software version is displayed.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [A.F.D.] and the [DISPLAY] buttons simultaneously, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

The model name, the destination and the software version are displayed for a moment.

COMMAND MODE SELECTION MODE

* The command mode (AV1 or AV2) of the remote commander can be selected.

* Procedure:

While depressing the [ENTER] button, press the POWER button to turn on the main power.

Either the message “COM MODE [AV1]” or “COM MODE [AV2]” appears for a moment and select the desired mode.
