These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

TV SERVICE SCREEN
     The service screen is provided to facilitate instrument alignment & service adjustments.  The service screen can be accessed by:
Press "Power button" to turn ON the TV.
Press the 'Menu" & "CH Dn" buttons on the front panel of the TV.
Service Mode Screen will be displayed.
SERVICE MODE MAIN SCREEN.
     Once in this service screen, use "Channel Down" button on the key board at the front panel of the TV, or with the 'Down' arrow button on the remote control to hi-light  item '2' Service Alignment.
SERVICE ALIGNMENT SCREEN
     Press "Menu" on the front panel of the TV set, or "OK" button on the remote control, to ACTIVATE the alignment screen.
SERVICE ALIGNMENT SCREEN
     Once the Service Alignment Screen has been activated, use the 'Volume Right' button, either on the front panel of the TV set, or at the remote control to adjust the value [V:0] to desired value.  When the service mode is accessed, the parameter will be 'Zero'.  This parameter is used to input the security code.  It is necessary to enter the security code to protect the Factory Alignments from unauthorized modification.  Attempting to change the parameter {P} using 'Channel Up' or 'Channel Down' button before the security code has been entered, the TV will 'EXIT' the Service Mode.
When the the Service Alignment Screen is entered, the Parameter {P} will come up with [0], which corresponds to the security code function.
  • With Parameter {P} set to 'Zero', adjust the value {V} to "76", using Volume Up or Volume Dn buttons, to access the Electrical Alignments.  Once the Security Code has been entered, the individual alignments can be accessed by using 'Ch Up | Ch Dn' changing the parameter {P} number.
                                             
DLP ALIGNMENT PROCEDURE Enter into Service Alignment Screen as described in the previous post {whenever necessary}
  • Once the parameter {P} has been selected for a particular alignment, the Volume ( < ) or Volume ( > ) buttons can be used to change the data value {V} of the alignments selected.  Most electrical alignments for this DLP instrument must be done using Chipper Check.
VERTICAL & HORIZONTAL CENTERING
Vertical and Horizontal centering adjustments should only be performed after replacing the Light Engine.
  • Turn ON the TV set and select the channel that will be used for testing.
  • Select the Service Screen Menu.
  • Select "2" Service Alignment Item.
  • Once the Service Alignment Screen is displayed, use the Volume ( > ) on the remote control, or at the key board to adjust parameter Zero  {P:0} to a value of [V:80]
  • With parameter zero {P:0}  value at {V:80}, press the Channel (UP) button on the front keyboard or remote control.  This will put the TV into the vertical and Horizontal centering mode.  See the illustration: 
  • Press the [Skip] or [Info] button on the remote control will bring up the test patterns one after an other.
  • Press [Go-back] or [Reset] on the remote control to display the first test pattern.
  • Press [Menu] button on the remote control to toggle the display between the test pattern & the turned channel or video.
  • Press [Power] button on the remote control to 'EXIT' the adjustment display {V:80}.
MECHANICAL PICTURE ADJUSTMENT
  • Remove the back cover.
  • Loosen the '2' screws at the lowest of '3' T320 screws holding the Light Engine in position.  
  • Turn ON the TV, and select that to be used for testing.
  • Enter Service Alignment Mode.
  • With Volume ( > ) on the remote control to adjust parameter zero {P:0} to a value of {V:80}.
  • With parameter zero value at 80 {V:80} press the 'Channel Up' button on the remote control, to put the TV into vertical & horizontal centering mode.
  • Press the "Skip" or "Info" button on the remote control to bring up the 'Cross-Hatch' pattern.
  • While supporting the Light Engine Lamp Enclosure back of the tension on theTthird Upper Screw, until the Light Engine will rotate with light pressure.
  • While viewing the Cross-Hatch on the front screen, rotate the Light Engine, so that, the Horizontal Lines are parallel with the cabinet frame.
  • Press the [Menu] button on the remote control to toggle the display from the cross-hatch to the channel video.  Ensure that, tuned video and crosshatch pattern are displayed with proper geometry.
  • Tighten the Light Engine screws and perform the Electrical centering Procedure.
