These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

RCA TVs _ GENERAL PROBLEMS AND SOLUTIONS _ TV WORKING BUT NO COLOR_ CAN'T SELECT CERTAIN CHANNELS


TV WORKS, SOUND OK, PICTURE OK, BUT NO COLOR

There are a couple of things you can check in terms of color to picture:
Be sure the program is being broadcast in color.  Try changing channel to see if the color is correct on other channels.

  • Try adjusting the antenna.  A weak signal can cause noise and loss of color in picture.
  • Try adjusting the picture quality settings.



  • Press Menu on the remote control.
  • Press the Arrow buttons to select the Picture Quality menu.
  • Select Picture Controls.  Here you can adjust the brightness, color, contrast, tint and sharpness of the picture.
  • Adjusting the picture quality on some RCA TVs is done slightly differently.  
  • Press Menu button and then use Ch+/- buttons to select the video menu.  Use the Vol +/- buttons to change the individual settings; 

 OR 

  • Press Menu repeatedly to select the Adjacent menu.   Then press 'Channel' to highlight the picture item you want to adjust using Vol +/- to adjust each item.  
  • Press 'Display' of 'Clear' to remove the menu.  Depending on your TV model, pressing 'Cancel' or 'Reset' on the menu while making picture adjustments, will return all adjustments to factory preset levels. 


CAN'T SELECT CERTAIN CHANNELS

There are a number of things that could be causing this problem: Parental Controls: The channel may be blocked or is not approved in the Parental Controls menu, if you have this feature. Accessing the Parental Controls menu depends upon the TV model.

OPTION -A

  1. Press menu to display the main menu.
  2. Select parental controls menu.

OPTION-B

  1. Press menu on the remote control to display the main menu.
  2. Select TV Setup.
  3. Select V-Chip set.


TV/VCR mode:  If  you're using a VCR, the TV/VCR button could be in the wrong mode. Press the TV/VCR button on the VCR to correct this. Cable/Air Setting: The Cable/Air function could be in the wrong position. Depending on your model, there are different ways to correct this.

OPTION -A
Press Menu button on the remote control, select the channel menu, then select the appropriate signal type:
OPTION-B
Select Guide Plus+TM menu from the main menu, then select 'Setup'option and provide the correct information on the following screens.
OPTION - C

  1. Check the reception; Cable/Air setting in the TV setup menu.
  2. Auto channel search.

If the channels can be accessed using the number buttons on the remote control, but not Ch+/- buttons, it may not be programmed in the Auto Channel Search function   Accessing this varies depending on model.

  1. Press Menu button on the remote.
  2. Select 'Channel' menu.
  3. Select 'Auto Channel Search'.
  4. Conduct a new search or manually add channels
