These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

             TO ENTER SERVICE MODE [REMOTE CONTROL RM-Y155]
  • Make the set to 'Standby' mode.  [Switch it on by its AC mains Power Switch, and press the 'Power' button on the remote control to make it 'Standby'.
  • In Standby mode, press [Display => Channel (5) => Volume (+) => Power] buttons by remote control.  Press each button within a second of each other.
  • Service Mode will be displayed as follows:

  • SERVICE > Mode.
  • HSIZ > Display item.

Press [1] of [4] button on the remote Conrail to call an item to adjust.
Press  [3] of [6] button on the remote control to adjust the data value to selected item. Press [Muting] and then press [Enter] button to write the adjusted data value into memory. Turn 'OFF the set to 'Exit' service mode. Press [8] then 'Enter' on the remote control to initialize.  After replacing the memory IC [IC003] carry out initialization.
 MEMORY WRITE CONFIRMATION METHOD
  • After all adjustments, pull out the plug from AC outlet, then re-insert the plug in the AC outlet again.
  • Turn the 'Power Switch' ON and set to Service Mode.
  • Call the adjusted items again, to confirm they were adjusted.
LED BLINKING CODES
When an error occurs, the Standby/Timer LED will flash a set number of times to indicate if possible cause of the problem.  If there is more than one error, the LED will identify the first of the problem areas. 
Result for all of the following diagnostic items are displayed on the screen.  No error has occurred if the screen displays a "0".
