These are an excellent investment where the saying: 'time-is-money' rules. However, to learn, you need to develop a general troubleshooting approach - a logical, methodical, method of narrowing down the problem. A tech tip database might suggest: 'Replace C536' for a particular symptom. This is good advice for a specific problem on one model. However, what you really want to understand is why C536 was the cause and how to pinpoint the culprit in general even if you don't have a service manual or schematic and your tech tip database doesn't have an entry for your sick TV or VCR.

While schematics are nice, you won't always have them or be able to justify the purchase for a one-of repair. Therefore, in many cases, some reverse engineering will be necessary. The time will be well spent since even if you don't see another instance of the same model in your entire lifetime, you will have learned something in the process that can be applied to other equipment problems.
As always, when you get stuck, checking out a tech-tips database may quickly identify your problem and solution.In that case, you can greatly simplify your troubleshooting or at least confirm a diagnosis before ordering parts.

AGING MODE
  • With 'NO' signal input,
  • Press "Power Off => On + Factory Mode.
  • A full white pattern will be displayed on the screen, instead of Power Saving mode.
  • In other words, the power saving function will be disabled in the Factory Mode.  
  • Supply one signal for 'leaving' aging mode.
TO ACCESS SERVICE MODE [FACTORY MODE]
  1. Press "Power" button.
  2. The quickly Push & Hold 'Volume ( - ) & Volume ( + ) buttons together.
  3. The screen comes out "Waiting for Automatic Adjustments" will be displayed.  Then the screen will be black for one second until comes out "Windows Screen".
  4. Now release the two buttons.
  5. Press "Menu" button with characters "F1 | FL1 NAFTA V0.91.1041124ADJSUT" {below OSD} will be displayed.

Scalar Gain RGB
Scalar gain for Normal | Warm | Cool PC mode.
Auto-color
Adjust color from received signal; either in PC or HDTV mode.
ADC offset RGB
Adjust AD 9883 for PC ADC offset.

PIXEL DEFECTS
The TFT monitor uses hi-precision technology, manufactured according to HP standards, to guarantee trouble free performance.  Nevertheless, the display may have cosmetic imperfections that appear as small bright or dark spots.  This is common to all LCD displays used in products supplied by all vendors and is not specific to the HP LCD.  These imperfections are caused by one of more defective pixels of sub-pixels.
  1. A pixel consist of one Red, one Green and one Blue sub-pixels.
  2. A defective whole pixel is always turned On [a bright spot on a dark background], or it alwyas Off [a dark spot on on a bright background].  The first is is more visible of the two.  A defective sub-pixel (dot detect) is less visible than a defective whole pix-eland is small and only visible on a specific background.
  3. Bright dots.
  4. Dark dots.
  5. Total bright and dark dots.
  6. No more than two adjacent defective pixels.  To locate defective pixels, the monitor should be viewed under normal operating conditions, in normal operating mode at a supported resolution and refresh rate, from a distance of ~ 50cm.  HP expects that, over time, the industry will continue to improve its ability to produce LCDs with fewer cosmetic imperfections.  There is no more repair to this defect
